Sample Math Placement Exam

Dilsky, thanks! I took the exam today (without preparing) and haven't had pre-calculus in awhile. I got 80% and was a tad concerned. It sounds like this score, coupled with my GPA and ACT math score, will easily get me in the class.

I followed the no calculator rule, but I could have answered at least a couple more questions with a calculator. At least I can still add, subtract, multiply and divide! ;)

I got a 28/45 but I haven't had a math class since may 5th and I need tranquility when I'm testing, and my dad kept yelling at me to clean my room in spanish.lol

35/45 here. Little lower than I thought. Damn neighbor started mowing his lawn 5 mins after I started the test. O, well, I hope they don't place me in Algebra 1.

I just finished taking the exam and got 38/45. Its not too bad as long as you remember algebra. I think its more important to make sure that you dont make any stupid mistakes by going through the easy questions too quickily.

How much solid geometry is on it? Like surface areas, volumes, and finding the length of lines that go through solids? Boy do I suck at that stuff.

44/45..............thanks Calc BC. Actually that was really easy, there isn't much geometry at all just a few simple area questions. There's a lot of slopes of line stuff and a lot of just simplifying algebraic equations. I didn't prepare and finished in about 40 minutes, and didn't check it over. I wonder what I got wrong????

Are the questions mostly designed as like word problems (ala the SATs) or is it very straightforward (as in like 2x+3x=10... solve)?

the latter

Having taken calc wouldn't help on this test. It was all algebra and trig. It was the trig stuff that got me...plus the unwanted distraction from my neighbor's lawn mower.

shortstop, i recall being able to look at your answers when you were done to see what you got wrong.

nope, i dont think you can this time. I wanted to as well, but doesnt seem to have a way to do so.

I'm in Taiwan on vacation...but reading this thread (yes, while on vacation...call me a loser) makes me want to take the test now despite lack of a good testing space. I'm just curious. Sounds incredibly easy.

Christine, when's your orientation? I wouldn't do it because it'd take out 50 mins of your vacation time. Enjoy as much as you right now!

Hey, was there stuff like the law of cosines/sines and heron's stuff in there? or a lot of precalc stuff?

I don't think there's anything like law of sines/cosines or heron's formula. It's more of a test to see how capable you are at doing basic algebra/geometry, not to see whether or not you have formulas memorized.

Christine, don't bother wasting vacation time taking it. It should only take you about 20 minutes, and is pretty boring. I think you can take it on the first day of orientation, anyways. Have fun in Little China!

meeeeh there was sin/cos laws on there. didnt remember all the precalc stuff from my freshman year. I got 35 out of 45 (77.77%) ... I was distracted by my neighbors lawn mowing too hahaha Must be from MSU, sabotagers.

Since I got all As in AP Calc AB and believe I did well on the AP Test I shouldnt have any problem getting into Calc 1 or 2 should I?

So the online math test is optional? If I don't take it online I can take it during orientation?

yeah but you'll look stupid being only 2 or 3 among 400 students who hasn't taken it

No, I probably didn't put that right. You should do it before orientation if at all possible, but I'm pretty sure you're not entirely boned if you can't for some reason. I believe on the first day, they said something along the lines of "if you haven't taken math placement yet, you have to go get it done right away". And even then, you have to do it online, but in a computer lab/library somewhere on campus. So unless you have some extreme reason that you're not able to do it before hand (like being on vacation in Asia for almost the entire time between when the test was available and when you go to orientation), do it now. You won't be allowed to register for classes until you complete the placement test.

36/45. No excuses. I'm actually quite proud of my mediocrity.

And for those of you who have not yet taken it, two pieces of advice:
1. Answer all the questions. Guess if you have to, but they don't count against you.
2. Know your ****ing trig!
