Sample Sat Essay (11)

This is my own sat essay I wrote back in June 2010. It scored an 11/12. I am physically retyping the text here from the essay image included in my score report.

Common sense tells us that people tend to get along better with those who are like them, who think and act as they do. Many people, however, get along very well with people who are very different from them and may prefer to associate with those whose views and actions are different from their own. In fact, some people even complain that they are bored and irritated by those who are too much like them.

ASSIGNMENT: Do people tend to get along better with people who are very different from them or with those who are like them? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

People like to be with people similar to them. It is a part of human nature. It is easier to communicate and work people who are similar; they will have the same views and thoughts. this tendency to get along better with like-minded people can be seen in international relations as well as in high school cliques.

One of the most prominent international relationships is that between Isreal and the muslim nation of the middle east. Tensions between these two factions have existed for thousands of years. The major difference between them is simply religion. isreal a jewish nation in a primarily muslin region. there would almost certainly be less violence if Isreal was muslim as well. The muslim nations have tried throughout history to invade isreal such as eygpt's attempt only a few decades ago. The failure of these two bodies to get along is due to their differences in religion. Both are extremely religious and want to impose their views on each other. if they were both of the same religion, they would get along much more readily.

This tendency to get along with similiar people can also be seen in local places such as high school. Teenages are known to form cliques, groups of similiar people. The people within these cliques get along great with the other fellow members because they are all alike. they usually have the same interests and hobbies. in my school, i know that all the people who like to skateboard outside of school have their clique. they are all great friends because they share a common interest. they are able to relate to one another and because everyone is similiar, they are able to understand each other better. it is much easier to talk to someone just like you than to someone who is different.

The tendency of people to get along better with similiar people is evident. one of the main reasons why isreal does not get along with its muslim neighbors is that isreal is jewish. they ahre a fundamental difference and thus, have less to relate to. on eht other hand, when people have similiar views, they are much more likely to get along such as in high school cliques. similiar people have similiar opinions and it is easier to talk with them than someone who is completely different. People like to have people who agree with them and are just like them; it gives them common ground on which to build friendships.

not the best essay, but i guess it got the job done. :p

Without being rude or anything, I’m somewhat surprised you scored so highly, with basic spelling and capitalization mistakes, though I guess the graders must have liked your examples.

Good job nonetheless!

FYI, Egypt is now the only direct neighbor which has diplomatic relations with Israel(Dayton Accords). Egypt had even enforced Israel’s blockade on Gaza

^Why would that matter? This doesn’t have to be historically factual.

^
I know. I was just telling him for his own knowledge. It’s always good to learn something.

Thank you for posting this.

spelling has no impact on the essay scoring as long as it is understood. lazy typing is the reason for the lack of capitalization mistakes and other blatant spelling errors.

the Egypt example was just something i had on the top of my head. at 8 am in the morning, you’ll use whatever you got

Well, at least it’s not about Hitler.
