SAMS at CMU

please help ;__;

I just took the SAT today too! Well, if your score ends up higher, then you should be able to contact them and ask them if they want an updated one…I sent my transcript to another program just a little after the due date because I had updated grades, and it was acceptable. :)

krndnl, you can send it to them later. Or you could print off your scores and add a note that you will send them a full copy later.

oooh, great advice, thanks!
also another question;
they say we have to write a “one paged typed statement”. do they want a full out 5 paragraph essay or just a sort of free response 1 paragraph statement?

because if i double space (which i’m used to because my high school emphasizes the importance of doing so), a full out 5 paragraph would go easily exceed one page.

There is no such thing as a “five-paragraph essay”. So don’t write one.

Really, it’s just a construct produced by primary education specialists who were lazy.

They want a one page typed statement. Make it one page, make it typed. Nothing else matters. (If you want to write more, don’t double space.)

so it’s actually due APRIL 1st?!?!?! really? -.-

No, not really. Someone just made up that date to screw with you.

Yes, really. Is that such a groundbreaking fact?

Sent my stuff in today!
Anyone else applying?

lol chaseholl, just that all the papers I received said otherwise, and I got it in by march 1st. that is all, at least it is done with =]

when do we hear back from them?

reading the previous years’ threads, it varied anywhere from mid april to may.

what did u talk about in ur essay? now that we’re both finished:)

Oh, the stupid essays. I’m writing my diversity one now … I hate diversity essays even though I’m plenty diverse. The prompts are just always so vague. Hopefully I can get my stuff sent in tomorrow …

I know…i really didn’t know what to write so i wrote whatever came up to my mind. let’s hope for the best!

thank you puzzlesolver, and ugh. the wait will be painful :stuck_out_tongue: Being a Hispanic female with immigrant parents, the essay was not too difficult for me :)

x3savearth314 i’m sure u’ll get in with no problem then wow! that is really diverse lol

bump!
is anyone else applying??

Just finished all the application stuff … my second essay is horrible. It’s laughable and cheesy, really. I wrote it as fast as possible to escape the urge I felt to just delete it from my computer. I also fudged with the line spacing a bit (1 on the first essay vs. 1.1 on the second) because I had no more to write after three-fourths of a page.

Another wonderful thing: I asked my counselor to write a recommendation for me to or three weeks ago, and she forgot until I asked her this morning. But she’s writing it now and everything should be sent by tomorrow … I love that they want it postmarked by April 1, rather than received. I’d be screwed otherwise.

Now, I should really go back to doing my chem hw and studying for a nasty gov test that’s tomorrow … but I’m going to sleep. Ugh.

Haha, it would be tough to set a deadline of “receive by” since it’s through snail mail :stuck_out_tongue: I finished mine today too! My diversity essay was alright since I immigrated here with my parents when I was 7, but then again I’m Asian… My interest in science and math essay was better, but that one was crammed in last night…

thanks puzzlesolver :slight_smile: haha but nothing is guaranteed :slight_smile: I felt both my essays were strong but you never know. The first one i wrote on this study i did for my sci. fair project that got best in fair/ first place in state/ and an ISEF int’l finalist so hopefully! :slight_smile:

it’s kind of a bummer SAMS is non credit though :(

I didn’t really know what to write about for my math/science essay so I just wrote about my extracurriculars relating math and physics (competitions, clubs, past summer programs)… it wasn’t as strong as my diversity one, which i wrote about overcoming hardships in life and how my personality is ‘diverse’ than others. I deviated from the original question a little bit in the sense that I didnt talk about my racial diversity at all, but hopefully the readers won’t mark me down for that.

Good luck everyone! One more day to send in your stuff!!

btw… there has to be more than us four who applied for SAMS. where are the others? hehe

starting my essays now…
