Does anyone know how strict the age requirements are for the SAMS program at Carnegie Mellon? I'm a rising junior but won't turn 16 until September, a few months after the start of the program.

You cannot apply:

SAMS applicants must be at least 16 years old and have completed their sophomore year of high school to participate in this program. SAMS participants will be required to reside in university housing.

So there’s absolutely no leniency?

My D was in the same boat last year with an August birthday. She went elsewhere and plans to apply to SAMS for this summer.

16 seemed to be a magic number for a lot of programs, including hospital volunteer opportunities and the like.

Did you contact the program to see if they had no exceptions, or did you just assume that you HAD to be 16? If not, I’m definitely going to try and ask them because I don’t see why a few months is a big deal. In New York, you can become a hospital volunteer as young as 13.

Thanks for all the info!

I believe she emailed, yes, to confirm.
