Hey guys!

I am from the Netherlands and I am applying for an exchange at the University of California - San Diego. There are like six colleges there and I have to choose one. On the websites there isn't too much informationa about differences between colleges? Are there any serious distinctions whatsoever? Can anyone help me?

just dont pick 6th. Thats the one (I think) that is way off campus and far away from anything.

San Diego State is really big, not that hard to get into.
U. of San Diego is a small, religious university.
UC-San Diego is the best one academically.

I don't know of any other colleges in San Diego.

he's talking about the 6 colleges inside ucsd

no...its Eleanor Roosevelt is one of those far out there (past the super computer...past the soccer field...). Revelle...it's like a whole other campus, super far. Sixth? one of the closest colleges from the University Center, and is a 5 minute walk away from the Engineering campus in Warren.

Each college has different graduation requirements. Some are harder to graduate from (ie Revelle and Elinor Roosevelt) and some are easier. At least that's what I've heard from friends going there.

I would suggest Muir or Marshall. Since they are on the west side of campus, better location, more scenic and convenient. Revelle is on the west side but i really dont like their buildings.

Which one is the nearest one to the Political Science Department?

Choose Muir or Warren. Muir has by far the fewest GEs. Most people in Warren don't seem to mind their GEs too bad. I don't personally know much about TMC. Sixth is fairly lame because it's still small and currently located in the oldest part of campus. Revelle and ERC should be avoided; these have both have a lot of GEs and extensive (5 qtr+) writing programs.

Thanx man,

but I am an exchange student and I will be there for like two quarters so GE's (General Education classes?) are not an object of my interest.

Anyway, thanks:-)

If you're an international student, I'd strongly suggest ERC. As an exchange student, do you have to complete all the GE's? I'd assume that instead, you would likely be taking classes in your major that would be applied towards your degree in NL. Thus, the negative of ERC - the 6 quarter writing course - probably doesn't matter anyway.

The poli sci department (as well as International Relations/Pacific Studies) is located in ERC.

ERC also has I-House - the housing for international exchange students.

(FYI I'm in Revelle).

:)

ERC has the newest dorms and buildings.

John Muir, PICK JOHN MUIR! By far the easiest college in terms of breadth requirement, don't choose 6th or Warren at least, the Warren requirement I thought was a little heavy.

Jeebus guys, he's an exchange student. He comes for a year, takes some classes, and leaves.

Don't base it on GEs. Base it on location and "where would you want to be for a limited period of time?"

Exactly.

The thread is entitled "The truth about UCSD-Revelle" and has a rather detailed comment on Revelle. The same guy also gave detailed comments on Muir, Marshall, and Warren.

This is the "Unofficial UCSD Community" blog with all sorts of information about the school and the six colleges. And you can post your questions there.

alright, here's my take on the college system...
REVELLE - definately don't go to revelle...nothing good bout that place, except close to clics, which is juss a social place not really a library...
JOHN MUIR - is awesome if you don't have to worry bout ge's...their food is good (they got coldstone-like ice cream, for you in the netherland, its just REALLY good) and if you do stay in the res hall, get an upper floor tioga, cuz you have ocean view. muir's also good cuz its close to a lot of the lecture halls (peterson, york, solis, csb, etc...) and the closest to the beaches like black's if you're interested in surfing.. AND OF COURSE, for the sun god festival, closest by far, especially when you're tryin to get their drunk...hahaaha...
THURGOOD MARSHALL...only good cuz of ovt in my opinion.
ERC has really nice dorms cuz they're brand new and its right next to the gym, rimac (largest west of mississippi) and they have fine dining (every wednesday, they serve like prime rib, filet mignon, salmon, etc...)
WARREN - is good, i chose it cuz it has one of the chiller ge requirements, but that's not a factor for you. warren is nice, cuz you have nature (ie canyon) right next to you, its fairly quiet, close to the pool and warren lecture hall (where there's a LOT of classes) and of course, EARL's! which is awesome cuz you have a convenience store open till 1am that you can use your meal points...also has a coffee area =) it's the worst for parking hands down though, but i doubt it matters if you're international.
SIXTH - is just in the boonies...its completely forgotten and hidden, like seriously. it's good cuz its right next to gilman parking structure (doesn't matter for the guy in netherlands) and closest to price center (the main area of campus with the bookstore and food). food works, their cafeteria, has good salad and pizza, but that's about it...

so, for the guy in the netherlands, who luckily doesn't have to care bout ge's...i'd go for muir! for everyone else with ge's...muir or warren =)

Just tell me guys which one is the nearest to the Pol Sci Department... and maybe sth about living conditions.

thanx in advance

GoBlue 81 and nathanmle - thanx guys!

Closest to the poli sci - ERC.

Best living conditons - Warren or ERC (Muir has the oldest dorms...but if you really want to eat at the cafeteria there, it's only maybe a 10 minute walk from ERC, 15 from Warren).

:)
