I want to hear your opinions of san diego state. Even if i can/can’t afford the tuition, is OOS SDSU worth it? What are your opinions on the school? Is it mainly a commuter? I just want to know if I should consider it or if i shouldnt. I hear people tell me that the school isnt good enough for me, but what do you guys think?
The majority of Cal states are commuter schools since Cal states are established to give “local area residents” access to an affordable 4 year university education.
My younger son is going into his 4th year as a CS major at SDSU and loves it so much he has jokingly stated he would like to stay for a 5th year (not happening since he is on track to graduate in 4). SDSU is more residential than some of the Cal States since students seem to live close by even after moving off campus.
The SDSU alumni network is strong and they have a great mentorship program for students that matches Alumni and student interests for internships.
We are California residents so our costs are affordable, even with my son living off campus (home is 2 hours away). San Diego is an expensive city in which to live, so costs can be an issue depending upon your financial situation.
He has found that the academics and social life are a good fit and is heavily involved in his Fraternity. Greek life is an integral part of SDSU’s social life however, if you are not interested in that aspect, you can find many like minded students also.
Not sure what you mean by"isn’t good enough more me". SDSU is one of the top CSU’s (ranked and respected) and it also has a excellent Honors college (Webers Honor College).
As an OOS student, you will be paying close to $40K/year to attend. Is it worth it for you? Much depends upon your college budget/family income and your priorities.
My advice is 1) figure out if spending $160K/4 years is affordable to your family, 2) come and visit the campus to determine if it will be a good fit 3) form your own opinion about SDSU and do not rely on other peoples hearsay.
Typo “isn’t good enough for me”. Also noticed your parents are setting the budget at $35K so SDSU is probably unaffordable if you include transportation (flights home) and incidentals. California as a whole is an expensive state in which to live and be a OOS student. You have many affordable options on your list and you are a competitive applicant based on your stats on your other thread, SDSU is definitely good enough for you.
Just a warning, if you do not choose to be a part of “Greek” life and do care about your social life, San Diego State is likely not the place for you. Greek life runs this campus and basically has all the fun stuff to do, if you are not a fraternity and/or sorority member, there really isn’t much to do at all. In fact, I chose not to join a fraternity, and I cannot wait until the day I graduate and leave this school. If you don’t go to the gym 24/7 and and care more about social life than education, I would look somewhere else
My nephew (sophomore), niece (senior) and neighbor (sophomore) and dd’s friend (senior) live on campus and are not part of greek life. They are involved in very different ways on campus. They all love and rave about SDSU. It’s not just about greek life. There is so much to do, but you have to be willing to be proactive. If you want to get a feel of the campus, you have to visit but . . . .
It doesn’t look like you can afford to go.
While I do agree that many students at SDSU prioritize social life, I personally choose to focus on academics and sleep, and I have a great time. I’ve met many people with similar interests, not wanting to party, drink, or join a frat or a sorority. I do think getting involved in a club is very helpful, because it broadens your horizons and helps you meet new people who have things in common. Going to the gym is a great way to relieve stress and make some new friends— you don’t have to work out hard core. I go to just blow off some steam every day. I’ll grab dinner with some friends, then go to sleep before 10 pm every night.
What I’m trying to emphasize here is that SDSU, like any school, is what you make of it. People may tell you there’s a certain lifestyle you have to live if you go there, but you can live whatever way you want to.
As to commuting, many people commute. The school is very quiet on fridays and the weekends, which to me is a great thing. If you do commute, it’s important to make sure that you do get involved in the school in some way, because you want to make sure it isn’t like high school and you’re only there for the classes.
