San Diego State University- how competitive?

Hi :)

I was wondering how competitive SDSU was in comparison to other schools- it looks like a really great program, and if there's anyone on here currently attending I'd love to hear what you think about it! Thanks so much. This is such a phenominal website. :)

San Diego State is an “impacted” campus in the Cal State system. This allows them to ramp up the admission GPA/SAT to get in, and even with that, many cannot get in. Even though you only need a 3.0 (and no SAT with that grade or higher) to get in to a CSU school, you will need probably a 3.9 and high SAT to get in an impacted campus program. You need to apply and just see what happens. Be sure and send in the SAT, even though it is not required with at least a 3.0 GPA. They offer you another CSU campus if you do not get in the one of your choice. Out of State has higher requirements. Check the CSUMENTOR website. I really haven’t heard anything about their theatre program, but in general, it is a good school- but very crowded (I went here MANY years ago). Don’t plan on getting all your classes in 4 years.

Their undergrad program is alright, their mfa program is phenomenal… they do not offer a BFA i believe. I do not think it is too hard to get into SDSU, I don’t think their undergrad program is too competitive either, although I have heard that it keeps getting better every year.

Every major at the school is impacted right now so it is pretty difficult to get in. I believe your apply as a pre-major, and then have to meet certain criteria once you are there to be admitted into the actual major. There is no guarantee once you are accepted to the school that you will eventually be admitted to the major. They don’t have a MT major; it is straight theater (unless they have added it recently). There is not an audition such as there is at many MT programs. However, the program (once you are in) is a good program and includes a lot of guests artists and good local support. There is a good theater base in San Diego and they seem to support the program well. If you are OOS, you may have more trouble getting in, plus it will be expensive. Other than that, you can’t beat the school for location!

I live 2 miles from SDSU. It is a beautiful campus. However, the school is very much desired and as a result very impacted. Last year, there were 67,000 applications. The average GPA was 3.8 and I don’t know about the SAT’s. If the school fits your major, and your major is some what off the beaten path…then I would apply. It is very difficult to get into and difficult to get your classes. This year, they have accepted early applicants that have 4.0+ and high sat’s. We know quite a few students at SDSU because we are local. The biggest complaint is getting your classes.
