So I have a lot of schools that I would love to attend. San Diego State is my the top choice, there’s also San Jose, San Fran, Chico, Fullerton, Northridge, that all offer me a degree of interest. That being Public Health by the way. I started this discussion to focus on San Diego State. Okay so, what do I have to do to get in here? Yes, you’re probably thinking I could find this out easily. However, I always seem to find out something new ON TOP of all the other info I already knew but was also provided by the fantastic people that run this site. Moreover, I’m going into my senior year and I heard that for Cal States you “Self Report” grades, but I have no idea what this means? Lastly, I was wondering why some people also choose to have minors? Are they extra work? Do they count for Graduate Level fulfillment? Does the minor fulfill/count for the major itself? Thanks!
SDSU admits by major and eligibility index. For 2018, the average CSU capped weighted GPA was 3.93, SAT was 1264 and ACT was 27. 2019 admit data is not available as of yet, but most likely the stats will be higher. You want to target these #’s for the best chances of an acceptance.

Self-report grades: You are not required to submit your HS transcript for the Cal States until you are accepted and enrolled. They will admit you based on the courses and grades listed on your CSU application but you need to make sure all information is correct. Any discrepancies could result in your acceptance being rescinded. Once accepted, the CSU’s will ask for your final transcript where your self-reported information will be compared to the official HS transcript.

Minors are not required but for some students they may have a specific area of interest other than major they would like to pursue and for others it could mean and area to complement their major. Minors are not necessary and could additional coursework to a 4 year degree which delay your graduation.

Not sure what you mean for Graduate Level fulfillment? Minors courses could fulfill pre-req’s required to apply to a Graduate school but you will still be required to complete Graduate level courses for your Graduate degree.

Some minors have an overlap in your major. IE. Microbiology is Chemistry heavy in required courses so for my degree, I only needed 1 course to complete a minor in Chemistry and a Major in Microbiology.
What are your current stats and - are you applying as a freshman or transfer?
@NCalRent: OP is a Freshman applicant.
SDSU is one of the more competitive CSUs. 3.8 and 1250+ SAT would probably do it.
The application is pretty straight forward, you enter your grades and they trust you about your grades until after you graduate, when your HS will send the full transcript.
As to majors and minors, i wouldn’t worry too much about it until you get to a college and take a few classes. There are plenty of GE classes to take for the first couple of semesters and, it will make a lot more sense then (and they have advisors to help you if you need it). Most of the schools you list welcome Undeclared freshman applicants. The exception is SJSU which actually has a somewhat higher threshold for Undeclared than for Public Health.

your stats would help us suggest a few schools on which to focus.
I’m currently taking Anthropology and Nutrition to fulfill some lower-division course work for the Cal States I mentioned above. I’m taking these at a local community college named Cuesta College and before I choose them I made sure they are (UC/CSU) transferable. I’m doing both of these summer before senior year of high school. My counselor told me that I HAVE to get A’s in both of them. I’m not worried about not getting A’s in these classes, because I have taken very rigorous courses in my time at high school. Any idea as to why she emphasized me getting A’s in both college courses? Also, I’ll provide my stats later on here. I was just avoiding this website because I was busy with school still.
Taking CC/Dual Enrollment courses while in HS could be problematic if you plan to go to Medical School, PA school, Dental School etc… since these CC courses will be on your permanent college record and the grades will have to be submitted for any Pre-Professional or Graduate programs.
So that’s why she advised me to get A’s?
Yes
@Gumbymom and @NCalRent, Since I am also taking (2) college courses over the summer (anthropology and nutrition), which are of course lower division for what I want to major in (public health), how do I report these on the CSU application? I have never used it so I really wouldn’t know, but last year a senior told me there are certain sections for math, English, etc. Is this true? How will I even get the 2 college courses onto my CSU application? I’m so confused for some reason, and I just really want them to know I took these courses when it’s time for admissions.
Here is a link for some Cal State apply instructions to give you an idea of what the application looks like. You will enter all your HS a-g courses and your college courses under the academic History section. Each a-g course will be listed in their correction academic section. I suggest you get an unofficial copy of your HS and College transcripts before you attempt filling out your application starting October 1. You want to make sure your course descriptions listed on the application match your transcripts.

You can use this link to see the list of your HS and College courses and which courses should be listed in which of the a-g sections.

Specifically for College courses: https://help.liaisonedu.com/Cal_State_Apply_Applicant_Help_Center/Filling_Out_Your_Cal_State_Apply_Application/Cal_State_Apply_Academic_History/04_Transcript_Entry
I would check with your HS counselor if you have any questions on filling out the application and you will be required to list your college courses and send a official transcript to the college you attend, so all the schools will see these courses if you fill out the application properly.
Thanks!
