So, if I only have SF and SJ as a choice, which one should I choose?
I'm planning to work out of US after college. My mom suggest me to go to SF because more people know SF. But I heard computer science is better in SJ.
Anyone here is in SFSU and majoring in CS? Is it good? Do I need to take biological science?

intel, I’m not sure about a biological sciences requirement at SFSU, but the general thoughts are that SJSU has a better CS, Engineering, and Business program than SFSU.

This is largely based on my opinion and observances (I do live in the bay area and head A LOT about both schools and their programs), so hopefully someone can post with some real experiences for you. But just to start it off - SJSU.

SJSU is actually closer to more engineering and compuer science related opportunities because of it’s closer proximity to SV.

But then SJSU is not as recognize as SFSU?

btw, SF gave me CS major, but SJ gave me undeclear even though I chose CS.

I wouldn’t say that. They are both equally reconized in the CSU system. San Francisco is a world-known city, but San Jose actually has a higher population and a much larger land area. So if zooming in on a map, SJ would pop up quicker than SF. I think most in the US would generalize both as just being the the Bay Area. I’m not sure about internationally though.

That’s because the CS major at SJSU is impacted, but it isn’t at SFSU. SJSU has admitted you ‘undeclared’ or ‘undeclared engineering’ because they are already considered at their limit of declared CS majors. Refer to the Impacted Programs Matrix for CSUs here: http://www.calstate.edu/sas/documents/impactedprogramsmatrix.pdf

This can be a bad thing, and a determining factor in choosing which one to attend. Typically, impacted majors on a campus make it harder for students to register for needed classes to move on to more advanced studies and perpetuates their stay at that school. This is more likely to happen at the lower-division classes since every student of that major is required to take the same ones whereas upper-division classes have more flexibility in choosing classes to cover a single requirement.

Presumably, you are within SJSU’s local service area and did not meet the threshold for CS there? (see [fall 2012 frosh impaction](http://info.sjsu.edu/web-dbgen/narr/admission/rec-1328.html) and [fall 2012 transfer impaction](http://info.sjsu.edu/web-dbgen/narr/admission/rec-1329.html) for thresholds)

If you attend SJSU, you will have to [url=http://www.sjsu.edu/advising/change_of_major/]apply to change your major/url. Since CS is impacted, it may be difficult to get into the major (note, however, that the similar software engineering major is less impacted).

So does that mean I should choose SFSU? since I’m going to straight into CS? Just really hope someone who is studying in SFSU majoring in CS can give me some advice…Is it all math? I don’t really love math. I’m more like an art person.

CS will require the ability to think mathematically and logically, even though typical freshman calculus won’t be used much.

Bump. Wonder if the fact that no one from SFSU CS is answering, is actually an answer in itself?

If you want to do CS, SJSU, most definitely. Though I’d recommend Software Engineering instead; the CS program here really isn’t all that great but the SE department is fantastic.

I’ll second what pyro is stating. Almost every time I see SJSU’s CS program mentioned here in CC, it is later recommended to do SE there.

CS and SE at SJSU are rather similar in curriculum (if you look at the course descriptions, most of the same numbered CS and SE courses have the same descriptions, which means that they are probably the same courses). SE is generally less impacted and less selective for admissions.

I got the same Situation as you , btw SJSU must be more independent like laundry or something. both CSU had accept me in CS… but i don’t know which to go either
