San Jacinto Dorm

I've already been accepted into UT so my next decisions will be about what dorm I will live in. I visited UT this summer and got to see a tour of the dorms. I really liked San Jacinto and really want to stay in it because I really want a private bathroom but I've heard some negative reviews on San Jac. People keep saying it's on the top of this huge hill and make it seem like it's isolated by itself, but when i went to visit, the hill didn't seem that bad to walk up and it seemed close to Jester to me, so I was wondering if there is some other hill I missed that makes living in San Jac so bad? Also people say its an anti-social dorm because of private baths, but I was wondering how can a dorm with close to 800 people (on the UT housing page it said there were 800 capacity) be anti-social? All 800 people can't be anti-social people can they? And it's not like you really meet all your friends in the community bathrooms when you're trying to take a shower. So if you could give me pros and cons on living in San Jac that would be great.

I don’t consider San Jac isolated. It’s at a very busy corner of campus (21st & San Jac) and relatively speaking, it’s really not far at all from Jester. BTW, it’s at the bottom of said hill, not the top. It would probably probably further away from classes than most dorms, though, unless you’re a social work student. Not a huge deal though - if you’re an engineer, for example, I’d look at the dorms on the north side of campus, but otherwise you should be fine.

I can’t speak to whether or not San Jac is antisocial, but really, whether or not you end up making friends depends on whether you make a conscious effort to do so. I have a friend who was miserable in Jester because she didn’t know anyone there. I lived in a dorm with a community bathroom but I don’t recall actually forging a friendship with anyone in the bathroom - the thought of that happening is really making me laugh, actually.

LOL Thank you! That just made my day. xD

I’m currently just applying to UT myself, but I did visit as you have and I had the exact same experience. The dorms were really nice, didn’t see the big problem with the hill as others have said - maybe it’s just compared to the others it’s bad, or we came at a good time (could seem worse during blazing hot/tiring days maybe?).

As for anti-social; the dorm did seem quiet to me, not that I visited the other dorms to compare, but I was greeted by students who were studying as I passed by so its not like the occupants there hate social interactions.

ya, when I went the tour guide said he lived in san jac and that it was a closer community than jester becase it was smaller. However, he said that something was always going on at jester and that is where most freshmen live and since most people don’t know anybody, or know very few people, everyone is eager to make friends. I wanna live in jester even though people say certain floors smell like pee.
