Hello !
My Son is looking to apply to San Jose State Software Engineering program
and looking to understand what kind of GPA would he need to get in.
He has 3.5 Cal State GPA, Would he able to get in for 2023
SJSU admits based on their impaction index threshold and major. For SE 2022 admits, the threshold was 4920.
He needs to calculate his impaction index:
### Impaction Consideration Factor | ### Impaction Point Calculation Value |
---|---|
A-G Grade Point Average (GPA) | 800 points x A-G Coursework GPA |
Local Admission Area | 200 points |
Eligible for Cal State Apply application fee waiver | 40 points |
Military Status (Active Duty, Veteran, National Guard or Reserves) | 40 points |
First Generation (Applicant is first generation of their family to earn a four-year college degree) | 40 points |
Freshmen applicants to programs in the College of Engineering will be ranked using a modified eligibility index that will take into consideration applicants’ math GPA in addition to the factors listed above.
### Impaction Consideration Factor: College of Engineering Only | ### Impaction Point Calculation Value |
---|---|
Math Coursework Grade Point Average (GPA) | 400 points x Math GPA |
A 3.5 CSU GPA even with a perfect Math GPA added to the base threshold calculation along with any of the additional points for local admission area, first generation etc… would not get him to the 4920 threshold for Software Engineering.
The impaction thresholds do fluctuate from year to year but a CSU GPA of 3.5 is well below a competitive GPA for SE or CS.
CS which is not in the Engineering college would only use the base threshold calculation without the Math GPA and I believe last year, a 4.25+ CSU GPA was needed for admission.
Cal state Northridge, Sacramento and San Marcos offer SE and he would have a better chance at admission at these campuses.
Assuming that your Math GPA is same as (A-G) GPA, you need 4.1
How about Electrical Enng
Take a look at the thresholds for fall 2022 frosh here:
Note that the thresholds are competitively determined, so they may be different in future years.
EE had a 2022 threshold at 3800. You need to calculate the Freshman impaction index based on the information I posted above. Compare your calculation to the index’s posted by @ucbalmunus to see where you stand.
So what is your Math GPA? Do you qualify for the extra points such a Local Admission Area (graduates of Santa Clara County HS), fee waiver, Military or First Generation?
Again, Here is the calculation information:
The base value with a 3.5 CSU GPA is 2800 (3.5 x 800) so to get to a minimum 3800 for EE, you would need a minimum 2.5 Math GPA for the additional 1000 points if you do not qualify for any additional points. I would say that EE looks like a good possibility however the index thresholds change from year to year as noted so better to be well above last years level.
