I have Unweighted 2.9 GPA, Weighted 3.13. Want to do computer science at SLO.
ACT 32, Software Intern at a reputed silicon valley company during summer, Java Trained and Certified,
7 APs, Rice Certified in Python, Attended Hackathon. My Goal is to get a Computer Science degree and become a top-coder at one of the Silicon Valley companies. Know Java, Python, HTML, Software Testing.
I am doing the Early Decision. My other choice is San Jose State. Appreciate your opinion on my ED at SLO.
Also, what else I can do to up my chances of getting in. I am aware my GPA is low. THanks.
You may have a better chance at a similar level private school(like university of San Diego,or pepperdine) or even a similar level UC like UCSB since these schools are much more holistic but even then these schools are a stretch for you. I’d say SLO is near impossible for you since they care very little about EC’s( they only have like 2-3 spaces for EC’s) and there prompts arent geared toward mentioning your EC’s so EC’s have little weight. Your test scores are good but are only above average for their renowned CS department not enough to where you’d have a shot at the school. I’d say with a 36 ACT you’d move up to a reach but for now you’re at a high reach only because Cal poly is so GPA oriented
Thanks for the reply. I was hoping if I do ED may be my chances are up. How about Cal Poly Pomona?
GPA is everything.
What the schools want to see is effort in all of your classes, not just sitting in front of a computer all day.
CS is a very competitive major. With that UW 2.9, CPP will be a reach.
Really unlikely for both with your GPA.
How about Sac, Sonoma or Chico State ?
Thank you.
It’s best to go to CC and transfer to Berkeley route.
SLO had around a 10% acceptance rate for CS last year. Along with BME and ME, CS is one of the most competitive majors, so you need to be above the averages in the Freshman profile.

CPP is also a Reach due to GPA. UCR might be possible since you do have some very good CS related EC’s. As stated above in the other posts, GPA is heavily considered so look at some privates, UCR/UCM and some of the other Cal States. UCSB is out of Reach with your GPA.
Good Luck.
@LKPUTRA i think you’[d have a decent shot at cal poly pomona probablly a high match because of such a high ACT, i think you should do pomona ED
@BucketsUCSC: Cal Poly Pomona does not have ED. SLO is the only Cal state that offers ED.
Unless the OP is in the local service area, he will still have a difficult time in getting an acceptance at CPP. I predict possibly waitlist.
@Gumbymom didn’t know my bad
Thank you, I am going to ask if Urbana Champaign is reach, i want to save dad some money, is out-of-state seattle University, University of Portland good ones for my profile? Again computer science major only.
Dont know bout others but urbana champaign definitely high reach
I am done filling in the San Louis Obispo application for Early Decision, I am about to submit my application. My profile is as above - unweighted 2.9, weighted 3.13, CSU GPA 3.0. ACT 32, Computer Science major.
I want to doubly sure that my ED with SLO will help my chances. Also, i was told that I can directly call the SLO counselor or email them (and find out my chance of getting in) before i actually submit the ED application. Will the counselor be able to tell my chances at this stage? Please help.
I doubt any SLO counselor will give you an idea of your chances especially since all applications are not yet submitted for comparison. For some sort of perspective, I will give you my younger son’s admission information from 2 years ago. CSU GPA: 3.73 ACT: 31. Applied ED in October, deferred to RD in Dec and finally rejected at the beginning of April. Acceptances are determined by a computer, no counselors will see your application until acceptances are posted.
Estimated acceptance rate for CS is less than 12%. Yes, ED may give some applicants an advantage but for the highly competitive major such as CS, they will accept the top applicants first to lock them in the ED round and defer the rest. There is no harm in applying, just be realistic about your chances a find some other schools to get excited about.
Thank you. Are San Jose State, Cal State Pomona reasonable enough for better chances? I am not intrested in other CSUs particularly.
Cal Poly Pomona and SJSU will use the eligibility index to rank their applicants. Your’s calculates out to 946.
(CSU GPA x200) + (ACT comp x10)
SJSU’s EI threshold for CS was 1021. You are below the threshold but this will fluctuate yearly based on the applicant pool. I suggest you apply for Software Engineering at SJSU which has an EI threshold of 862.
CPP could go either way. You might want to look at CSU Long Beach and CSU Fullerton for CS. I would also apply to UCR/UCSC and/or Sac State/SFSU. What is your local CSU? You will have priority there, so that school could be a safety.
Here is the link to SJSU’s EI thresholds (only CSU that publishes their EI’s) from this year’s Freshman class:

Good Luck.
Thank you so much.
