San Luis Obispo Social Life

So I’ve been debating between SLO and UCSB for the longest time and I only have a couple of weeks to decide. I know that I shouldn’t choose a school based on the party scene, but I am a very social person and can’t think of going to a school that’s quiet and unappealing. I know that UCSB is known for their party scene, which I am okay with but would probably be overwhelmed, but I’d rather pick UCSB over SLO if the school is too quiet and isolated. Since my ignorance of SLO is showing, could someone who goes there please describe the school atmosphere, social-wise. I know that I will have to work my hardest to graduate, but I would like to know that if I ever need a break, it will be there. I’d also like to know of the overall personality of the school. I know there will be awkward kids, and the d-bags because every school has them, but the average kid.

SLO absolutely has a party scene. Join Greek Life if you want… there are plenty of house parties too, and the town is walking distance from campus with sports bars, etc.

Also, don’t forget to attend Week of Welcome (WOW) in September! It will get you started!

Im in the same situation as you OP–did you make a choice?

Can anyone who attends there now tell me how easy is it to get to the beach from SLO? Is there a bus that goes there or do students really need a car for that? My daughter goes to UCSB and loves it. My kids grew up on the beach, so access to one is a key part of what they both were/are looking for. Both are such great schools, it is coming down to splitting hairs for my son.

Here’s the link to the Regional Transit Authority bus schedule which includes rides to all the local beach communities.

I would also like to know about the social life and general student body personality!

The social life at Cal Poly is so good that some folks neglect their studies. Instead of worrying if there is enough opportunity to party, I would commit to getting your work done first. UCSB has a reputation of parties getting out of control. Cal Poly is somewhat tamer than UCSB, but who want this outside your front door? <a href=“Civil Unrest in Isla Vista | The Daily Nexus”>http://dailynexus.com/2014-04-07/civil-unrest-in-isla-vista/
