Hello,

I was just passing by and was wondering if anyone were familiar with colleges with fairly good course offerings in Indic/Vedic studies and the Sanskrit language. Thanks for any help in advance!

It used to be that the big four were Chicago, Penn, UWashington, and Berkeley, but I don't know if that is still the case.

My advice would be to go to google, click on advanced search, then limit the domain to search only in .edu Try searching for sanskirt, sanskirt major, sanskirt department and see what turns up.

University of Chicago, they offer the weirdest language courses there (not kidding), and because sanskrit is a much more common language than some of the others, they undoubtedly should offer it.

Sanskrit, eh? Interesting...

Three colleges offer it as a major.

Harvard, Bard College, and the University of Iowa.

Obviously, Harvard would be a great choice, but no one can "count" on it. Bard College and the University of Iowa have excellent language departments as well.

There was some controversy a while ago about Harvard Sanskrit professors/other academics getting involved in a California history textbook revision process. Some Hindu organizations were looking to change wording to put a favorable light on India/Hindu history and a professor who took the opposing side took a big hit from them and some parts of the community...it's clearly an active department.
