Now that acceptances are out, I will mention that often at the private schools, students getting bigger scholarships (half or full) can and do find out earlier than portal/mass updates either through an attachment in the acceptance package or personal letter/email from admissions directors. I mentioned that earlier but didn’t want to discuss it too much and confuse people, because not all the big ones come out early. We had one AD email my daughter and discuss details of her essay and why she was impressed, offering her a nice scholarship in an informal email followed by a package in the mail two weeks ahead of anything going out to anyone else. So odd things happen in admissions! So you may hear about some scholarships out there already but there will still be large scholarships when they update the portal, and the Johnson Scholarship at SCU is still up for grabs as well. The other merit scholarships like Deans and random amounts definitely come out with the portal update and a letter to back that up. As mentioned before, last year that was on the 19th.
@TheBigO if you don’t mind me asking, what are your stats?
kgwaterski yeah I knew that they really cared a lot about their UW stats but I did not expect a full rejection as well… too bad
@kgwaterski ,my D was denied also, she had applied EA for business. We would have thought she would have been deferred if not accepted EA. You just never know what they are looking for each year.
Congrats to those who have received acceptances! For those not accepted like my D, don’t stress, there’s another great school out there waiting to call your name!
Can’t believe I got rejected… I really thought I would be deferred if I wasn’t accepted. Congrats to everyone who was accepted though
@Salutation How do you know if you got into the school of engineering? It says I got in,but nothing else. I also did mechanical engineering. What are your stat btw?
Has anyone heard about scholarships
Btw it said on the myawards page I got the Presidential at Entry Scholarship. Not sure what that is and I dont care. I really don’t even want to go there.I got into Cal St Fullerton which is a dream school and I got some money there which is nice cause I’mout of state, still should be around 20,000 a year. But well worth it!
I was accepted for engineering EA
30 ACT (higher superscore), 700 reading SAT, 670 math SAT, 3.8 unweighted GPA at good catholic school in almost all APs or advanced classes. Strong essays and a lot of good EC including service trips, writing in a newspaper, and a TV interview. I did a campus visit where I went on a tour. No merit yet
@papyrusreed - When you called SCU, did they explain why some merit would be posted immediately, though? It looks like some folks have already received awards, and I think the Presidential and Provosts’ are both awarded at admission, so perhaps the ones for EA have been identified already?
S is blissfully unaware of this, and still has 4 schools (3 are RD) to hear from, so we’re making no decisions yet, obviously, but it’s a little odd.
I was deferred to regular decision after applying EA for Business and Economics.
GPA is 92.2 unweighted at a Jesuit college preparatory school. ACT score is 30. a few AP courses, lots of advanced placement classes through HS, lots of ECs, captain of varsity cheerleading (4 yr sport), varsity lacrosse (4 yrs), varsity golf (2 yrs), lots of service and volunteer experiences, work experience… does anyone have any tips on what I can to do be accepted the second time around? SCU is my top choice, but I feel as though that was unclear the first time because I had applied ED to Wake Forest and was rejected. If accepted into Santa Clara I would immediately send the deposit, and I AM willing to change to a different or undecided major. Any advice?
I think the majority of the merit aid comes out within the next week or so, so I wouldn’t be too concerned (yet). Do the people who already got scholarships mind sharing stats?
Deferred from Leavey EA
3.6 UW/3.9 W at a top 100 public school
29 ACT
7 APs/ 2 Honors
Lots of ECs and Football honors
Great essay, a little bit surprised but have other good options.
Does anyone know any stats about the deferral acceptances in RD?
Accepted into the College of Engineering (Computer Engineering)
3.73 Unweighted GPA
33 ACT (35 E, 30 M, 33 R, 33 S) (34 Superscored)
Will have 6 APs, 4 Honors, and 2 CC Courses by the time I graduate
Solid Extracurriculars
Strong Essay
No package via snail mail has arrived here in SoCal yet.
Also, the financial aid package is not on the portal yet.
@msdarcy DD got her official package in the mail yesterday. We are in LA. No merit information yet.
I’m glad to hear that no merit has been released yet, although some that people have posted that they’ve received (President’s & Provost’s scholarships) are pretty critical for Honors program entry. I’ve promised S to not post full stats, but 4.0UW, NMSF/(F), 35ACT, excellent recs - he’s still. But philosophical, too - much as he loves SCU for its social justice focus, he has other options. (And an edit - if I remember correctly, students can also apply to enter the Honors program, even if they weren’t selected at admission. So there’s that, too. It’s not hinging on merit, but it sure helps!)
@2manybooks - confident he will get in honors program with those stats And yes, people can apply if not selected at admission. Is he engineering? Cause frankly, honors in engineering doesn’t get you much compared to other disciplines. A lot of honors classes outside of engineering actually conflict with engineering course offerings because they are so specialized and only offered at a certain times. So if you are engineering, it’s more the label you get than the classes you can take.
Thanks, @CADREAMIN. He’s definitely not Engineering! Both parents in tech, many friends of the family in tech - and at this moment, in fact, he’s taking a B/C Calculus final and excels in science and math - but he wants nothing to do with engineering. Humanities, all the way. SCU’s biggest detriment, honestly, is that it’s too close to home, figuratively and literally. He knows it pretty well. But to know it is to love it, so we’ll see. May 1 is a looooong way away.
Along the lines of what @CADREAMIN said, another parent whose son was in engineering at SCU said that they were unhappy with the honors program because of scheduling conflicts and the inflexibility of the honors admin toward engineering students. He was so unhappy that he withdrew from SCU. When I first heard this, I was concerned because my S wants to pursue CSE. But then I realized that he doesn’t have to apply to honors to get an engineering degree at SCU.
