@anothermuggle - Yes, I have to agree totally with SCU being unpredictable with merit. Cause we are local I know a lot of personal stories of low offers from SCU where other comparable schools gave much more, even schools ranked higher offer more it seems, especially to high end students. I don’t think kids with lower stats get bigger packages, I think they get more financial aid and call it all their scholarship. Imo SCU is more generous with financial aid than merit aid. I think that is where their money goes. Oh the stories of merit I could tell - we are local so I know some personal tales from friends that seem to back up your assertion. Again, just an opinion, but from folks I know it seems in the private/Jesuit/Catholic schools out west, LMU, USD, Gonzaga, USD, Chapman, and even USC give more predictable merit than SCU - generally speaking and just from the little world I know. Also, UW gives a nice chunk to out of state students called their purple scholarship to bring it down to UC pricing so they can compete with them. So even with them you have a pretty good idea going in to the app process. SCU merit is anybody’s guess.
Interesting. If he goes out west, it’ll be LMU or SCU and it will come down to merit.
I will put it out there, if merit is in play at both places, my guess is LMU will be higher. One of mine had a huge scholarship from LMU (Arrupe plus departmental to equal full tuition, so would just pay room and board) and was offered 14K from SCU, which was also far less than he got at USC. Go figure. (My daughter forbids me to ever discuss her stuff, she didn’t even tell her best friend, she is super sensitive to people’s feelings and knows my login name here.) LMU is a beautiful school and the location to everything is so great, which you know! Hope it all works out however you want it to. We had our LMU package by the 9th of December last year btw, found it in the goodie box when looking for SCU info. Is that out yet?
I’m also applying LMU, acceptance emails started being sent out yesterday, which was later than last year. (I was accepted) Did you receive merit aid from LMU December 9th, @CADREAMIN ? I read somewhere that people didn’t find out about their scholarships until the end of January last year. LMU is one of my top choices, and I’m anxious to find out about merit aid. Sorry don’t want this to turn into an LMU thread! Just curious.
Congrats and good luck to all possible LMU students! I graduated in 1984, eons ago, but loved my 4 years there. Still have many close friends, even though we’ve passed our 30 yr reunion, and I’ve been in the upper Midwest for the past 20 years. Wonderful people and programs! Many opportunities for volunteer outreach.
@CAmidwestMom - Are you a transplant from CA to Midwest (like me!) or Midwest to CA? If you don’t mind me asking…
PS. My best friend from LMU’s middle child graduated from Santa Clara (had a great time there) and is at USC Pharmacy School now.
@morningside95 I am a transplant to the Midwest. After moving around a bit, including stops in the South and New England, we landed here in 99 and have really been happy raising our kids here. We try to get back to California a couple of times a year, preferably in the winter months!
are you using http://ecampus.scu.edu?
I think portal decisions might be up
For ED? We are EA and it’s unchanged.
Are they really? DD is in school now and I promised her not to check portals.
I applied EA and there is no update on my decision on the portal.
One of my friends told me that they were up, but I just checked and they aren’t. I’m assuming all of us will find out within next week? Still confused as to whether or not we will find out first online or through mail.
I’m EA and nothing has changed on my portal.
Thank you for for ypur positive energy! I have my only son waiting for ED so this is a tense time, yet I feel confident. There was an incredible fit when we vistied. We have no legagy and I heard ED was mostly for legagy… Do you believe is true?
Also, do EA and ED decisions come out at the same time?
When do they release decisions?
No, ED does not only apply for legacy students. I am assuming that ED and EA admission results come out at the same time, but I do not know for sure. Your best bet it to call the admissions office and confirm, just in case.
@CAMidwestMom We’ve been in MN since 1995. It was a struggle, at first, as people are rather reserved and settled here, (and we didn’t have kids here.) But the friends we’ve made are golden and we’re staying. That being said, I too, need to get back to So Cal at least 1x per year, usually 2x - the second being to hang with my LMU friends! University of Santa Clara is an outstanding school, for it’s programs, location, and it’s people. I consider all lthe Jesuit schools at brother/sister schools, not rivals (that spot is reserved for Pepperdine!).
Thanks upennpal!
@sublime25 did you get your decision?
