Santa Clara University EA Applicants

“A friend’s daughter got a “pending” letter and was asked to reapply. Does anyone know exactly what this means,”

Not sure, but son got a letter asking if he wanted to be considered for “regular” admission.

My daughter recived a SCU Dean’s Scholarship $18,000, and a grant of $5,100. There were also $5,500 in loans which we are not interested in.

Got incencentive grant,
My stats btw are 3.52 uw, 33 ACT composite,
Got into engineering

Hey you guys I also received the SCU Incentive Grant.

Is that $12,000 scholarship recurring every year? Because I know its $4000 per quarter/trimester and it says it can be used for a maximum of 12 quarters when you click it to learn more.

If that’s true, that’s one hefty scholarship! Anyone else who received it know what I’m asking? (could be potentially $48,000 after 4 years)

Shrinkrap, are you interpreting this as sort of a deferral status, and that your son should prepare additional materials if he wants to be considered in RD? I know my friend’s daughter could just “ask admissions at SCU” but I know she wants to make her best case for them as this is her first choice. If you hear anything specific about what SCU expects from these applicants, let me know!

I beleive the letter said they wanted semester grades. It also offered the option of applying for a different school/major. And there was a deadline to respond. Pretty early in January I think.

Thanks Shrinkrap. Do you know if SCU uses the term “deferral” at all, or is this their process for throwing strong but maybe borderline qualified ED applicants into the RD pool? It sure looks like SCU had a talented bunch of ED applicants this year!

I think “pending” must be different than “deferred.” Daughter was deferred by letter and they used that word. On ecampus her status changed to: Regular Decision option. She also received a yellow Regular Decision Request Form with her letter, requiring a reply by January 7. They said 3826 EA applicants, 26% over last year.

midwstmom, did the letter ask the student to submit any new information? Shrinkrap said fall transcript, but are they also giving students a chance to present new information? I assume the student can write anything they wish to further their cause, but wonder if they specifically request anything. The daughter is very willing to accept advice from me (but not from her parents, who are wonderful people…) and I’m trying to guide her correctly.

For anyone who was wondering, the SCU Incentive Grant is renewable for all 4 years!

riverrunner - here is 2nd para of letter (my abbrev):
"If you wish to be reevaluated in RegDec, pls mail or fax the encl form by Jan 7. We require that you also send us your first sem or sec trim transcript from your sr yr. This info will help us review your sr yr academic progress and make a more informed final decision on your appl. In recent yrs, about 1/3 of students who elected to be deferred were eventually offered admission.

All RD freshman applicants will receive final notice of our admission decision by Apr 1."

So they’re only asking for grades but if this is where your friend’s D wants to go, then she should make sure the school knows and do what she can. When we were on the SCU campus tour, the adm rep AJ said that girls typically apply to 10-12 schools and tell them all they’re her first choice. There’s probably some truth to that but my D applied to 3 EA and only told one it was her first choice.

There is some good info in a series of articles at this site:

[College Admission Denials, Deferrals &amp Waitlists - college-admissions - College Confidential](http://www.collegeconfidential.com/college_admissions/denials_deferrals_waitlists.htm)

Hope this helps and good luck!

riverrunner: for context, SCU ,Cal Poly SLO, UCSB, and Loyola Marymount are my son’s BIG reaches.

accepted 3.1 and 27 act lego

Pretty excited, Santa Clara was very generous! I received grants, scholarships, and aid that cover 44K of the 49K total. That moved SCU up on my list a bit!

deferred
3.7 unweighted 3.9 weighted, 1950 SAT, lots of extracurriculars

i’m surprised since SCU was my target school and people with lower stats got in with $$
ahhh what’s going on…

Does anyone know if SCU admits RD on a rolling basis or if they send all letters out on same day as in EA?

Hi Everyone,

I just have a quick question. I applied EA. So I logged on to the ecampus account to check my status and it popped up and said admitted undergrad students, that means I am accepted right?? I know it might be a silly question. I am from Hong Kong and I have not received my admission packet yet, so I was a bit worried and just want to make sure.

Thanks!!

Yes that is what it means

Hi everybody,
I applied EA to SCU. And I logged onto ecampus to check my app status and under the right most column titled Application status it said “regular decision option”.
Does this mean that I got deferred?

I live in Dhaka, Bangladesh. So mail takes forever to get there and I haven’t gotten anything yet. And it doesn’t seem that SCU sends out email notifications. So all I have to go on is the app status on ecampus.
Would appreciate any clarification I could get.
And- anybody else in the same situation?
Thanks :)

Yes, you have been deferred. Your mail packet will include a letter saying as much and a form to request consideration for Regular Decision which must be returned by Jan. 7. Decision to be made by Apr. 1. If you haven’t received anything by next week, and you wish to be considered, you might want to call or email them.
