"Santa Fe's strong relationship with UF"

Sasser: SFC bracing for new round of budget cuts | Gainesville.com | The Gainesville Sun | Gainesville, FL

Read the last two paragraphs. Half of Santa Fe faculty has graduated from UF and the majority of Santa Fe transfers go to UF. I saw this video of Bernie but now I can't find it to link. I will keep looking for it. The relationship will continue despite budget cuts and that is a great thing!

Alot of UF’s faculty went to HYPSMC. Regardless of what Jackson Sasser says the pipeline has to be reduced to a reasonible number.

I think Santa Fe kids are burning up spots that should be given out to FTIC students. I would rather reduce them, and then reduce the burden on the new incoming freshmen.

SF shouldn’t be a free route to UF.

Look Machen only talked about the special partnership to have good town-n-gown relations. But the truth is: UF is Gainesville’s cash cow, and without this institution this small college town would be another Lake City. UF can do whatever they want and the Alachua County Residents should just shut their pie holes.

The truth is: a special partnership is no longer needed. Transfer Students from Community Colleges from all over Florida now are really trying to get the benefits of a University of Florida education. All should be treated equally and it’s undemocratic to have one institution that hogs the limited transfer spots year-in and year-out.

Let’s be as selective as we possibly can in who we allow to transfer in. Let’s make sure their gpa, and SAT scores were of high enough caliber to compete with the standard admits who are now juniors. In my personal experience these Santa Fe transfers were arrogant, self-entitled, and lazy.

Just my honest opinion.

Santa fe is definitely not a free route to UF. We have a friend who was denied with a 3.9 gpa. UF is incredibly selective about which transfers they take and have been for the past few years. Every 4 year florida university has a main feeder school (FSU and FAMU-TCC, FIU-MDC, UCF-Valencia, etc., etc.)

Santa fe is important to UF for many reasons, not to mention that their graduate students teach there.

I was just in G-ville last weekend for a game and to visit my sons. If you think that UF doesn’t have their share of arrogant kids, think again. Lazy and entitled, most SFC students are not. There is incredible to stress to get in and many are working a lot harder than the UF kids. I know because I have a kid in each school!!! My son who didn’t get in had a higher GPA and SAT score than my son who did get in…my son who didn’t get in got in to UCF, FSU and many out of state schools. He only wanted to be a gator and now is working harder than his brother, MUCH harder! He studies constantly while his brother parties. Guess who has the higher GPA?

Lets keep in perspective that what Santa Fe College desperately wants is to keep their cronyism relationship with the University of Florida. I am sure their are a few SFC students who work really hard, but in that same token so do students at FCCJ, St. Petersburg College, and Broward College. It’s disgusting that SFC students get first shot at the transfer slots simply because of the need to have strong town-n-gown relations. This Flagship university can do better, and Santa Fe Alumni should have a level playing field with the other Community Colleges transfers.

I don’t think any of this is going to matter if UF is going to seal off the admittance of transfer students.

FSU gives first shot at TCC students as does UCF to Valencia, etc, FAU to BCC, FIU to MDC, etc.

this topic again? lol. and the arguement never ends…

People are aware of the cronyism, and for the first time it is starting to be called into question. Notice all the egregious press-releases by Santa Fe about how they are joined at the hip with UF? They are playing damage control to fend off what is a clear case of cronyism.

“SF shouldn’t be a free route to UF.”

Agreed x 8 (sideways)
SFCC kids don’t deserve to be here at UF. I’m sorry but it’s the truth. As part of the UF 2012 class, we all worked off our asses in high school and are very smart individuals. It’s not fair to have all these stupid slackers just go to SFCC to get a free ride to the gator nation.

^ Wow you have nailed it! I couldn’t of said it better myself.

alexithymia, you should try not do be so arrogant. Not all community college students are “stupid slackers”. Some of these people may have been one spot out from being accepted as freshmen…And some of them may have had to work full time in highschool to support themselves…And they may not have a good support structure…And a lot of them are very smart individuals too

Look I have no problem with Community College students. Alot of them are late bloomers, didn’t have the same opportunities as the FTIC, and came from a difficult economic upbringing (etc…)

I just find a cronyism relationship with Santa Fe College to be disgusting. Do you realize that they get first billet over the other CC-transfers? This is truly egregious admissions practices for Florida’s flagship university (I also think TCC shouldn’t be allowed to pull this crap with Florida State either).

I also find it unfair that they are having to reduce the size of incoming classes at the expense of the FTIC freshmen because the Legislature refuses to pay their fair share. Basically I am of the opinion that the transfers should be cut first over Florida’s best & brightest high school students.

Wow, you are really arrogant SSobick! For your information: when you apply to FSU and don’t get in you get a pamphlet mailed to you directly from FSU. It is titled TCC to Florida state. It is a game plan for you to get your AA from TCC and then transfer to FSU. While you are at TCC you are entitled to use FSU’s gym, health care, get football tickets, access to libraries and many resources. They also have a coop program where you take classes at TCC and FSU consecutively. This is a wonderful program and is not only encouraged by FSU but promoted by them as well. Get off your high horse and know your facts before you start talking “crap” about other schools!

I have alot of friends at FSU. The ones I have talked to feel the same way.

Your comment was that “TCC shouldn’t be allowed to pull this crap with Florida State either.” How is TCC pulling it if FSU is the one advertising the relationship? UF does not send out pamphlets to denied students regarding SFC; they do not have such a plan. The TCC/FSU plan is very strong and and getting stronger. FSU just added the benefit of TCC students getting student football tix. TCC students are also allowed to join FSU’s awesome band.

My point is that this relationship is promoted by FSU. I have many friends whose kids are taking advantage of it. It doesn’t really matter if you and your friends don’t like it; apparently, FSU does or they wouldn’t advertise it!

FSU admin likes it because it’s good for business (you see they want enrollment as high as it possibly can be). Meanwhile my FSU booster friends realize that bigger is not always better for this esteemed institution. They are also of the opinion that the transfers are a big reason for such large class-sizes. Overall the donors have a major say in how this university is going to operate. Like it or not enrollment has to be cut at UF & FSU, it’s only a question of WHO has to get off the boat.

Basically I don’t understand why you get so angry at my views, when it’s in fact the Legislature who has consistently failed to provide the proper funding for the flagships. Maybe you should complain to them, and perhaps get them to change their funding levels (fat chance). Until then UF & FSU must do the responsible thing and cut enrollment to deal with this economic crisis. I highly suggest the transfers get cut first.
