Santa Monica College registration Date Help!

Hey, so I'm going to go to Santa Monica College in the summer and I didn't get the classes I wanted which were Com 1 and speech 5. So i'll be taking one different class in the summer. I could take those classes in the winter quarter, however.

So my question is how can I get an earlier registration date for the winter quarter?? Does taking a class in the summer move my registration date up for the winter quarter? And does the honors program move registration date up?

(The only reason I'm reluctant to join the honor's program is because I will be going to PCC in the fall and so that means I wont be taking any classes at Santa Monica in the Fall.)

[Priority Enrollment Information](http://www.smc.edu/EnrollmentDevelopment/Admissions/Pages/Priority-Enrollment-Information.aspx)

Are you still considered a “new student?” I don’t believe you get priority as a continuing student (which includes special programs) until you begin one regular semester which would be fall or spring. Double check this with a SMC counselor.

While I don’t condone gaming the system, one who wanted to could perhaps take one easy online class at SMC in the Fall to get status as a continuing student. Then you might also be able to join one of the programs (black collegians,scholars,EOPS,…).

I don’t know if this is possible, as it was just a thought I had about how it might work. I’m sure the programs have stuff in place to block this sort of thing though, like requiring that you be a full time student at SMC.

It’s very hard to find classes at SMC even as a long time continuing student, so I would try not to form your academic plan around getting the summer/winter classes there.

Good luck.

rockoz do you go to smc?

Yes I do. You?

Yeah, are you transferring this year?

oh ok thanks. Yeah its just that I would need those classes for my major. Are you part of the honors program at smc

@philo
I’m transfering to UCLA this fall for math/econ. You?

@mattymark
No I’m not in the honors program. But if I was I would have the first possible enrollment date. I’ve just gained better enrollment dates as a continuing student at SMC. You get earlier dates with the more units you accumulate as outlined in the link I posted earlier.

@rockoz

nice, me too. I just sent ya a pm

Does it get better from your first semester to the 2nd? I ask this because i will be going in the fall as a first time student and i just got my classes today! I dont think they were too bad however. physics, sociology, economics [waitlisted] and Poli. Sci.

Okay so instead of going in the summer now, im just going to take one online class at smc, hopefully join the honors program, and then hopefully get an early registration date for winter to get the classes that i need

Oh and do any of you know when the winter quarter is available to register for? (or maybe it started already haha)

@beachouse how’d you get you classes if you just signed up today (good deal haha)

The more units you have, the more closer to registration you’ll be at.
So, the newer student you are the later your registration date will be.

Ahhh ok. So u guys are unsure if priority registration is given to those in the honors program? Thank for your help though guys :)

http://www.smc.edu/StudentServices/Scholars/Pages/Program%20Requirements.aspx

Can you meet these requirements?

I had signed up a couple of weeks ago, my registration day was just a couple of days ago. I thought I was going to get really useless classes, but if you take the time to look, you’ll find something!

I also am hopefully joining the Scholar’s Program. I meet the requirements, I just need help as to how to do it haha

yes i can meet the requirements. the only thing that is hindering me is that i took the accuplacer test at pcc(and got english 1), and santa monica says they’ll take the scores from the test from other schools, but i dont know how to give it to smc. Do i just go over there and show them the physical form or what? And how does does it get cleared on my smc account because its not letting me register for certain classes because they said that i havent taken the accuplacer test yet.

So my question is how do i transfer my accuplacer scores taken at pcc to smc so they can clear it that I have met the english placement test requirement?

i transferred my AP english scores by meeting up with a counselor and showing her my AP score report and she added it onto my transcript and i was eligible for english 2 (did not get the class however since the remaining ones were for scholar’s and i still need to submit my thing) so Im sure its the same thing for your accuplacer test

oh so you don’t have to take english 1?

well with an ap score of 3 or higher in the english department, anyone gets exempt from english 1. not sure how the other one fares
