Good for them, but Philosophy is not impacted as say Biz Econ or Psych so I imagine getting in with a 3.1 would be unrealistic in that scenario. Which by the way, isn’t a 3.20 required for general admission? (https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/tradms.htm)

True. In that case, a 3.6~3.8 with TAP makes one very competitive for psych, biz econ, and other impacted majors.

As for the 3.2 GPA requirement, that may not have been required at the time that the people I mentioned getting in with 3.1s applied, but I could be wrong. Average admitted GPAs in pretty much all majors have risen significantly at UCLA in the past 5-6 years, so the minimum requirements for admission may have been adjusted in response.

Cayton, you posted that thread about 4 year students looking down on transfers. While I don’t believe it is uniformly true by a long shot, these low GPA admissions via a program such as TAP probably has a lot to do with the perception of unqualified transfers. I admit to seeing some of the first stats for UCLA admits right after the April 18 announcement and was flabbergasted at the low GPAs. That seemed to settle down after a day or two and higher GPAs ruled the day. But I was kind of like wth? I appreciate both TAP and TAG, but I don’t get why the minimum GPAs have to be so low.

I concede that that may be one of the reasons why, @lindyk8.

And having been through a TAP program at a school that’s well known for transferring so many students to UCLA, I can say that the program is pretty easy to deal with. The TAP classes were about the same in difficulty in comparison to non-honors classes. The only difference was that more writing was involved. I wish they made the classes harder, but they didn’t.

I haven’t heard of anyone saying the TAP program at their school had very hard classes that needed to be completed for TAP certification. At least that would justify the lower GPAs of some TAP applicants, but they don’t have that. It’s a shame, really.

@ocnative, I thought with TAP if you choose an impacted major, your alternate cannot be impacted, and vice versa. That might be a new requirement or I may have it all wrong.

@lindyk8

I believe UCLA specifically prohibits the listing of an impacted major as an alternate major regardless of what your first choice is.

Also, aren’t the impacted majors really different? It would be pretty difficult to get all the major prep done for two completely different majors different majors, i.e. CompSci and Psych

@Cayton @lindyk8

My school just said they have a 90% acceptance rate for TAP students at UCLA.

@bomerr

I was told by my TAP counselors that SMC TAP has such an acceptance rate and has had it for many years now.

@bomerr @Cayton
it sucks for those ten percenters.

I know I’m a little late to the party but can I get the survival guide link @annikabirnbaum. @uschopeful2013, @casperx, @Hsandovaljr or anyone else on this thread who may have the survival guide that Annika created would you mind sending it to me I’d greatly appreciate it.
