Sapphire Leadership Program at Smeal

I just received an email invitation for Sapphire Leadership program at Smeal College of Business. Are there any current students out there who have participated in this program? Is there any scholarship money associated with this honor? Thanks.

What is the Sapphire Leadership Program?

From what I can understand from last year, this is like a psuedohonors program for business majors. It is Smeals attempt to attract more students to stay in the college who are perhaps not quite Schreyer material, but are still good. I am not sure more $$ is associated with it.

is the application worth it?

Yea for sure. Any thing extra you can put on your resume is worth it. Especially when it comes to the buisness college where you have over 300 people in your major going for the same jobs.

oh, i got this too. and im so confused still.
i didnt apply yo shreyers’ ( prolly shoulda attempted), and i don’t want to.

can i be in the sapphire leadership program without being in shreyers’??

Yes, that is the point of the Saphire program. It is the business school’s “honors” program for students who maybe aren’t able to get in the Schreyer’s Honors College

there are no $ associated with Sapphire. Still worth it to apply though…any edge you can get is worth it.

“I was in Sapphire. Apart from having classes with the same 80-100 kids, there isn’t much to it. You also get to start on your business school classes earlier than most students.”

that is from a previous thread about the sapphire leadership program. is this true? does this mean smaller classes? i really don’t want to see the same 80 people in everyone of my classes.
or does that refer to additional classes just for the program where i would see the same people? bc. then i could understand.

Why would you care? It is something to give you a leg up on the 300+ students that will be delcaring the same major as you come junior year. This means better chances for the people in the program to land those internships and jobs during the summer.

Thanks for your response. I agree in this job market any edge is worthwhile. I am definately interested in applying, I was just hoping there might be some merit money involved as I may not be able to attend without some fiancial aid and/or merit money. Oh well.

Yeah Smeal will defientley be skimping on money for the freshmen. It sucks but it comes with being such a popular college. Other colleges however (Ag, Education) will be handing out money like candy.

Just a bit of clarification. The Sapphire program has changed and is now the “Sapphire Leadership Program.” Information can be found here: [The Sapphire Leadership Program — Penn State Smeal College of Business](http://www.smeal.psu.edu/uprog/sapphire) and its focus is upon leadership development. A student can be a Schreyer Scholar AND be in the Sapphire Leadership Program.

anyone know how competitive it is to be acceoteddd??
