Sarah Lawence v NYU v Fordham

Hi, Political Science major. NYU would be appreciably more expensive than the other two. Pre-law, poli sci major. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

They are very different schools with only the NYC vicinity being what’s in common. Academically any of them can offer you what you need for prelaw as the courses truly don’t matter much in law school acceptances.

What it really comes down to, is what can you realistically afford, and which environment do you like the best? When it comes to finances, you are going to need a lot of money to go to law school most likely, so starting out with a lot of loans is not a good idea. It’s not that easy getting a high pay position as an attorney either. Plus you should put in a lot of money into a good LSAT course and tutoring since those numbers will be crucial in terms of law school opportunities.

The thing is, you also gotta live your life these next 4 years and you are young and you can change your mind about majors, and career objectives. So finding a good environment that you can love is important. Which school do you like the best? Sarah Lawrence is smaller, has that LAC feel, is a suburb school, primarily female population, lots of artistic types there. Fordham is more the traditional university, particularly its RH campus. NYU is the quintessential city school. Big difference in everyday life among the schools, and you live your life everyday. You gotta balance that against the cost. In terms of academics, I think you can do just fine in course offerings at any of the three.

Do you want a small school? How liberal are you?

HS grad class was 125 people. Somewhat liberal.

Sarah Lawrence is a really unique liberal arts college that leans far to the left. Fordham is a medium sized Jesuit university in NYC, and NYU is a massive school (and many times you will feel that you are not even going to college; there is no campus feel, and people are pretty independent) that has a lot of focus on the arts. I don’t know about the strengths of political science at each school, but I do know they are all excellent schools. Take your pick

Are you not a parent? Previous posts indicate that?

I don’t know much about Fordham but I’m interested in Sarah Lawrence and my school is in Greenwich Village (yes, it’s among NYU buildings). I can’t tell I know everything accurately but anyway,

I felt awkward when you asked “NYU or Sarah Lawrence” at first and I still feel so. At first, I wanna tell you that your high school doesn’t matter but you. destinyhelp asked you “how liberal are YOU” not your school. I wonder, no offense, you know how to search a college.

NYU is a big school. It’s huge. There’s nothing like campus but the city (especially Greenwich village) is your campus. Your campus life and the city life will be mingled and mixed so you can’t even tell apart. (Personally, I’m tired of the city life so I really don’t prefer NYU. The school life will impact you a lot) Sarah Lawrence is completely opposite. It’s really small and not really city-like. (but lots of students come to the city in the weekends, as I know.)

And you should consider academic stuff too. NYU has a rigid grading system than Sarah Lawrence. While Sarah Lawrence concentrates on evaluation, NYU still use traditional grading system, as most schools in the States do. I wish you know the difference btw LAC (Sarah Lawrence) and regular universities (NYU). Size of classes, Faculty-student ratio and so on.
p.s. Sarah Lawrence doesn’t take SAT for undergrad admission

If you ask there’s any similarity btw NYU and Sarah Lawrence, I would say “it’s opened.” As a big school, NYU is very opened and gay-friendly. NYC is, as you know, much more gay-friendly than other parts of the States (though I really can’t say it’s perfect or heaven-like). If you are LGBTQ or ally, you will find a massive gay community here. Many centers, bars, clubs and so on. So it is unavoidable for NYU to be opened. However, I still would say Sarah Lawrence is more left than NYU.

Both are really good schools. It’s depend on your personality or preference. Good luck with your choice.

Since Sarah Lawrence has an unconventional grading policy, and a high GPA is paramount for getting into a good law school (along with high LSATs), I would talk directly to someone involved with law school advising at the college.

As to grading, NYU purports that it doesnt have grade inflation, but with average GPA of about 3.4, I dont think anyone beleives that. I think this is why more emphasize on LSATs.
