Sarah Lawrence supplemental analytical paper?

Would a research paper about prostitution that I wrote for my English class work? Or does it have to be about a piece of literature?

As far as I could tell it was supposed to be on a piece of literature, but maybe it would work. :/

Your paper on prostitution should work fine. There is nothing in the instructions that suggests it has to be on a piece of literature. Here is the language from the Common App Supplement:

"Sarah Lawrence College is a writing intensive environment. For this reason, the Admission Committee requires a sample of your analytical writing as we consider your application. Please submit a copy of an academic paper that meets the following criteria:

The paper was written for an academic class
The paper includes your teacher’s comments, feedback, and a grade.
The paper was completed within the last two years of your schooling.
The paper was written in or translated into the English language.

Note: Creative writing will NOT be accepted for the analytical paper requirement."

The key here is that the paper should be ANALYTIC. What matters is the analysis and the argument, not the particular subject.

Mine is longer than 500 words, is that okay? I just read in their FAQ that it is “recommended” to be 250-500 words.

Thanks so much northdad! That’s what I was thinking, but I just wanted to make sure.

jenniferdances, I emailed an admissions officer about the length, and they said that " it should be about 5 pages at minimum," double spaced. 500 words would be extremely short for a paper written for an English class, and I don’t even think it’s possible for it to be at least 5 pages and be less than 500 words. Are you sure they weren’t referring to the other supplemental essay (the one about why you want to attend SL)?

Did they really say that it should be 5 pages at minimum?? I uploaded an Ap timed writing I had in my english class. My Job was to analyze Shakespeare’s The Tempest, and write about it. I scored an 8 out of 9 (I had a few scored higher but I lost those :P) and my essay is about 2 pages long hand written. I asked my lit teacher about submitting it to a writing intensive school like Sarah Lawrence College, but now it seems I made a mistake in my decision to upload that paper. What do you guys think? Timed writing ok?

Okay, that’s a relief!

Can anyone give in their opinions regarding my decision to upload an ap timed writing? I know it’s the day before, but I need to know whether I need to change the paper or not

Does anyone know if it’s really important to stay under 72dpi when you scan it? I did that and it’s hardley legible…

joshy6442:
It says in their FAQ that you shouldn’t submit an in-class essay, and I would think that would include an AP timed writing… Also, I don’t think two pages handwritten is equal to five pages typed. If you can, you should definitely upload something else. If you’ve already submitted your application, maybe you can email or call them?

CallieMckay:
I couldn’t find a scanner that goes under 75pdi, so I did it using that, but it’s also hardly legible for me. I don’t really know what they were thinking asking for it to be under 72dpi! I’m planning on uploading what I have, and then maybe emailing them to ask if they want a higher resolution copy as well?

ahhh, what!! It totally neglected to mention those things on the common app! I already sent it in so I guess I’ll just email them about whether or not to upload other essays (although I don’t have any others saved now) :(

discospider:
Alright, I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t the only one submitting a super fuzzy paper. :stuck_out_tongue: It just looks so unprofessional! I think I’ll email them as well, that’s probably the best solution.
