Sarah Lawrence

has anyone heard of sarah lawrence college or has any experience with it? the more i hear about it, the more i find it appealing. i have a feeling it would be a good fit for me... i like the fact that it's very writing-intensive, arts-based, and that it's near nyc. please, if you know something, please share.

it is offbeat....they make no secret of it...

I've never had any first-hand experience with Sarah Lawrence, but since you are interested in the arts and like a writing-oriented school, it would be a good match for you (based on the stats you posted earlier. btw, if you apply ED, I'm certain you'd get in). Plus, being male helps, since the student body is disproportionately female.

Academics-wise, SLC requires you to be self-motivated, focused, and to design your own curriculum. The classes are like small, discussion-based seminars, and bi-weekly, students have some sort of interview/conference with their profs to discuss their goals/aspirations/special projects.

From what I've hears, SLC is an individualistic that forces you to dig deep and evaluate who you are. Perhaps a bit * too* individualistic, since according to student opinions I've read, the people there at times can be cold, detached, and self-absorbed, there is little sense of community on campus.

Also, from what I've heard, the student body definetely leans strongly to the liberal side of the spectrum and are very tolerant and accepting of people of diverse races, walks of life, sexual orientation, etc.

a lotta gays.....

There's a huge crime rate against students there. The surrounding town (Bronxville) isn't exactly welcoming to their off-beat, super liberal college kids. I've read articles about kids getting beat up and having things thrown at them when they leave campus and venture into town.

shrek, that's like saying there are a lot of smart people at harvard...fyi, i'm totally fine with gays, straights, pre-op transgendered lesbians, you name it. i'm past the victorian age.

to astrid: that's ok...i have a devious plan to ward off potential attackers, not that i would be a target of interest

Wow...I always thought that Bronxville was this beautiful, posh suburb of NYC (based on pics I've seen of SLC). It's hard to believe that these thugs that beat up and throw things at students live there...
The alleged "unfriendliness" and "pretentiousness" of the students could be a problem, gianscolere1. If you haven't visited campus, it's definitely advisable that you see for yourself what it's like before you apply ED.

gianscolere1:
Great response to shrek!

On the subject of the crime rate, just carry a dragon around for anyone who tries to hurt you... it should be effective, and you'll fit right in! ;)
My sister is applying and that is what she thinks she will do. Her backup plan (in case the dragon gets tired of burning people) is to carry a wardrobe on the dragon's back so that she can go to Narnia! :p

Lol yemaya13...that dragon idea vaguely reminded me of the end of the movie * The Neverending Story* when Bastion is riding that fluffy white dragon (forget his name) who scares the crap out of his school yard bullies as they soar overhead...

elbereth, that's also how i envisioned bronxville, that it was far from being bronx, new york. so, is it really a hang out place for thugs? it's funny to think that the college is full of smart, independent, offbeat kids and around the corner are thugs are talking ghetto and flashing their bling bling.

lol a dragon...how about a halo or a wand. "finite incantatem!"

Welllll...
I guess the halo or wand might work. People might think you're kinda weird, though...
I think the dragon and wardrobe are your safest bets.;)

Wow...I always thought that Bronxville was this beautiful, posh suburb of NYC

It is. Bronxville is one of the nicest suburbs of NYC. It has absolutely nothing to do with the Bronx (which is just a couple of miles away, but even then we are talking about a very nice area of the Bronx). As I understand it, it has become something of a tradition among a certain element of Bronxville HS students to harrass the Sarah Lawrence students. The Bronxville police are all over this and have made a huge effort to clamp down on it.

Gianscolere - Don't be fooled by outward appearance. Thugs also come dressed in Abercrombie & Fitch.

Gianscolere, Bronxville IS a very posh, affluent suburb... however, it has a rep for being very uptight and conservative - the complete opposite of 99% of SLC students.

bronxville is a town for old retiring people. there isn't that much to do there.

sometimes the locals throw eggs at the students and their cars. that's as bad as it gets.

there are very few guys at the shcool. if you can at least interact with someone on a basic level then you are guranteed to be drowning in SLC girls.

also: would the westchester people please PM me? i live in scarsdale.

this internet is making the world way too small.
