Sargent College or College of Arts & Sciences

Hi,
I’m a prospective Boston University student!
I am planning on doing PRE-MED and I was wondering which college is a better option for me to attend in order to do well in and have a better chance at Medical School acceptance in comparison of both colleges at BU?

Sargent College or College of Arts & Sciences??
Thanks for your input!!

Neither is better for med school as either way you will take the same prereqs and need the same experience to be competitive. You should choose a program you are most interested in, because that is how you will do well; if you are more intereted you will be more inclined to be engaged, and normally grades will show this.

That being said, I know both CAS and SAR premeds, and generally the SAR students really love their program. They can go into more of a sociology persepctive of health sciences in addition to actually premed courses compared to CAS majors (CAS majors absolutely can explore this area as well, but I find they usually don’t as often). CAS premeds tend to be bio majors, but the benefit of CAS is you can be any of the majors offered and still be premed, while SAR is automatically going to be more health focused throughout. CAS premeds I find tend to be a mix of serious premed students, with a whole lot of students who don’t stand a chance at med school and never really wanted to be premed in the first place, they just do it because they think they should (this should not deter you, of course, just an observation). In addition, if for some reason you decide not to be premed at some point, it is easy to simply continue in a major at CAS. In sargent you could still do this, but say you are no longer interested in the health field, you would likely have to transfer to CAS for the major you want. Not difficult, just an extra step.

Really depends on what you are looking for in your program specifically. But again, neither is “better” for med school admissions because you need the same prereqs either way.

As a side note, can you afford BU pretty easily? Important to consider how to keep undergrad costs down when med school is going to be a long, expensive haul. If your family can afford it easily, great, if not, consider BU but just keep this in mind.
