Hi,

I have given two attempts of SAT I

1) 2nd attempt
Critical Reading 440 Writing 610 Math 660

2) 1st attempt
Critical Reading 410 Writing 490 Math 600

11th class 65%
10th class 90%

I am thinking of applying for BS Engineering for Fall 2010.

Are these scores enough should I give SAT 1 again or should I go ahead and give SAT 2. Is SAT 2 required ?

What level of universities can I expect to get admit in ?

I have sent my free score to :

Univ of Pittsburgh
West Virginia University
Purdue University
Penn State University Park

I am further thinking of applying to:

Ohio State
Univ. of Michigan Ann Arbor
North Carolina State University
Virginia Tech
Case Western
Iowa State

Please advise.

No those schools do not require SAT Subject Tests, so there is no reason to take it. The only reason would be to help your case since your SAT is a little bit low. For example, if you take Mathematics Level 2 and get like a 700, it will help your case. You should be okay for all your schools except Michigan, very tough school to get into.

My advice for retaking the SAT I, yes, retake it! Also try the ACT in September, it might be a little bit easier for you. Try to get a 1900 combined SAT score to have a decent shot at Michigan if you are interested at all in that school.

Thanks for the reply …Well I know my reading is very weak… I thought a lot and realized that my chances of scoring better are very low…with the present score what level of universities can I get an admission in please suggest some( Major: Engineering)…

My brother is doing his masters in engg at Penn State main campus will this help me in getting admission there

I can think of giving Math 1 and Math 2 and try to get a high score( Can I just give 2 subject tests) .

That is an impressive increase. Even if you don’t get a chance to retake, it looks good on you for the mere fact that you improved substantially (210 point increase) and it shows you put the time and effort into perfcting your scores. that mere increase can help be a tipping factor, GL!

Well the schools you have a good shot in on your list are:
Virginia Tech (you are in range for M + W, a bit off for CR)
Purdue University (you are in range for M+W, a little bit off for CR)

New schools you could consider:
Illinois Institute of Technology (in range for M+W)
Rochester Institute of Technology (in range for M+W)
Worcester Polytechnic Institute (in range for M+W)
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (in range for M+W)

BTW, Rose-Hulman is the #1 Engineering School without a graduate school according to USNews.

Schools aren’t just going to look at your SAT scores, you get rejected from all of these if you don’t have a well rounded application. Good luck.

^I disagree. Aside from the very top universities, ECs hold minimal importance and admissions become much more predictable.

^Maybe so, but if you are applying to a school where engineering is the best field and you have a low SAT score, you need something else to counter it. Good ECs and GPA do help. A 1710 SAT score is pretty average, so if you have like a 3.7 GPA, that will help your case!

I honestly doubt you’d make it into Purdue with those grades. I’m a student here right now and I do know that admissions requirements are way higher than that for the engineering program. Unless you are an international student then maybe, but until you raise your CR score to 550+ then I doubt it.

Well thanks for the replies…

Well I became a US Permanent Resident like an year back but all my academics are from India… so technically I am an International student and administratively a US Student… so not sure how will it work out…

My GPA till my 10th grade was decent I scored 90% but dropped to 65% in my 11th grade coz in India lecturers dont give you marks at all after 10th grade the highest percentage was around 85% still I am 20% below…

@redsox2002 - Thanks for the university suggestions I will take them into consideration :)

Others please suggest some more universities I am planning on enrolling in either Civil or Industrial Engg…

No problem amanj91!

A few of these schools you do have a chance of getting in! It seems like Purdue is the best option for you, it ranks the highest in your field, but isn’t as tough to get into such as schools like MIT, Stanford, etc, etc.
