Ok so the title says it all ......What if someone is applying for some Engineering major at a good school scores great in SAT Subject Tests like 800 in phy , chem , math 2 but goes down in SAT 1 ( CR n W in particular ) to around 1800 ...
.what do adcoms generally infer from this ????

They infer that the person is exceptionally good at taking the SAT subject tests but not quite so good at taking the SAT reasoning.

^Few colleges have the “standardized tests only measure test-taking ability” mentality, at least in practice. You’ll find a remarkable correlation between high test scores and entry to top schools.

OP, what is your score breakdown?

My SAT 1 score is M 730 W 540 CR 540
and SAT Subject Test M2 780 Chem 800 Phy 800
My GPA is great
I want to do Electrical engineering…Am afraid of applying to Ivies and other top schools like Stanford , Mit , Caltech etc…
Do students with stats like mine get into the schools i mentioned above …??

Well your 1800 SAT will make is difficult to get in to any of the schools you have listed. I would come up with some other fine schools where you will not be 400 points under the average applicant. I am not saying you have no chance but it is best to be realistic.

…but there are people who get in with those scores ?? Aren’t my sat 2 , gpa gonna make any difference ???

@ceresma : which are those schools ???

If it’s not too late, you might try taking the ACT. You may find that your composite on the ACT is relatively much higher.

Check the common data set for the colleges you are considering to see whether it makes sense to apply there. You can do an internet search for the school name and “common data set.” Check section C, Admissions, where the colleges report the breakdowns of various SAT scores for admitted students. If your scores put you in the bottom 25% of the admitted class, you might want to rethink applying there unless there is something else about your application that makes you really stand out. Some individual websites have even more information; for example, Princeton’s website shows admittance rates by grades as well.

Your subject test scores are great, and some additional research might help you find colleges that will not only welcome you but also offer you merit money!

In general, not without a HUGE hook. Since there are plenty of students who want to do EE who also score 700 on CR, your numbers are not very competitive without a compelling story.

Checking common data set for Caltech, for example, 75% of Frosh matriculants scored 700 or better on CR. Only 25% scored lower, and a lot of those were probably in the 600’s. MIT is lower, hoever, at 650.

Also look at Cal-Berkeley, which has a top Eng program and is not so test sensitive. Or Michigan.
