SAT 11c practice test math help

i can't seem to get the answer to this problem. Can someone explain how to do it... thanks!

"If g(x)= 6x-1 and g(f(5))= 71, which of the following could be f(x)?"

a) 2x+13
b)3x-2
c)3x+6
d)4x-8
e)4x+11

D) 4x-8

We know that g(x) = 6x - 1, and at some value, the g function is equal to 71. When will g equal 71 though? 6x - 1 = 71 when x = 12. That means that f(5) = 12, allowing g(f(5)) = g(12) = 71. Now we look through the list of possible functions and 4x-8 is the only one that equals 12 when x = 5

Perfect! I got the 12 then was second guessing on what to do with it! Thanks!
