which of those scores should I use? I'm not really "ACT conscience." Also, for the summer, should I concentrate on improving the better score? or is the better score already high and I should focus on the lower one? And in reality, does SAT or ACT really matter? Like really really?

Im planning on applying to NYU and Northeastern, so i need scores that can match them

Your ACT is much better than your SAT. I guess this just proves that some people do better on one test than the other. The range for UChicago is 28 - 33 and i imagine that Northwestern is the same - maybe 30 - 34? Anyway, you could probably get into them both with that score, especially because NU accepts a fourth of people that apply.

Definately the ACT. Did you take the ACT after the SAT because that’s kind of a big score jump. If not, stick with the ACT because you’re obviously much better at it. 30 should be OK for those schools, but I would retake just to be certain.

That middle 50% is deceiving unless you have some hook or are URM. If you want a reasonable shot at those schools a 2+ point increase will help you MILES.

Especially since Uchicago and NYU (if you’re applying to Stern) emphasize a lot on these tests. What major are you planning? That’s also pretty important.

Chicago’s ATTENDING range is 29-34. NU’s is 30-33. Accepted range is probably higher.

A 30 puts OP near the lower 25% of attending students at both schools, and almost certainly in the lower 25% of accepted students. This means that unless he has a great hook, he probably won’t be accepted. NU and Chicago both have SAT scores higher than the lower Ivies, so there’s a great amount of selectivity present at both schools.

Actually, UChicago places a very very low emphasis on standarnized testing as far as I know. I think it only correlates that applicants with high standarnized scores are accepted is because the kinds of people that Uchicago accepts happens to also do well in standarnized testing. I mean, if someone is like the president of a bunch of clubs and does community service like crazy, chances is he’s probably a hard worker and would do well in school. Like, I know somebody who got in with a 1900 because of awesome ECs and essays. That’s their main focus - essays.

So I guess I’ll have to raise my ACT score by a couple points. Is that difficult? Should I also do some SAT prep this summer anyway?

And what colleges can I “safely” get into with a 30, just so I know some of my current option? I’m interested in Northeastern and the University of Pittsburgh. How does a 30 work for me at those places?

The average ACT for students admitted to Northeastern is 30. So, depending on your grades, EC’s etc. you would likely be admitted. NEU would be a match, not really a safety.
