SAT 2 scores?

Hello, everyone! (first post...)

I think Mudd is a school I would like to try for, but I have a concern about my SAT 2 scores.
I received a 760 on the math level 2 and a 690 on the Bio M...are these too low? I know that it's expected that applicants have at least 750 on the math level 2, and I barely made the cut there, but what does Mudd expect on the SAT science exam?

I think the rest of my application will be decent - will the SAT scores hurt?

Thanks for your replies. :)

EDIT :: I hope this post isn't naive. I just saw that someone posted a similar thread, though mine is slightly different. Sorry about that.

Those scores are not terrible but they are by no means going to help you get in. I think that something like 90% of the admitted students score 800 on the math ii.

Science scores should be pretty high too… perhaps in the 740-760 range to be considered competitive.

I, personally, did terribly on the SAT (one take) but quite well on the SAT II. I’d advice retaking the science (or other sciences)…

I agree with rocketDA. I got an 800 in Math II, 760 in physics, 700 in Bio (E), and I personally don’t think the 700 in Bio held me back. I agree that an 800 on Math II would be good, and clearly you could just retake it if you were so inclined and try for the extra 40 points, but I don’t think I would if I were in your shoes. I guess it depends on how strong the remainder of your app is.

You’re going to need a better bio score, or some other test in its place. It’s sort of an unspoken assumption that if you’re going to survive Mudd, you’ll need to be able to score 750+ on two science tests.

I recommend retaking the bio test for a better score. Alternatively you could try your luck at the physics or chemistry exams. I personally got a low bio score (lower than yours) and then took the physics test instead for a much more acceptable score.

While taking another science test, you might as well try for the 800 on math II anyway while you’re at it :)

Now you have me paranoid about Son’s 780 in math II. He did get an 800 on physics tho.

Especially with the 800 in physics, I wouldn’t worry about the 780 on the Math II. 20 points shouldn’t make or break his admittance, but the rest of his application could.

That said, If he has free time and is stressing (unnecessarily) about it, then he may as well take the test again (I raised mine from a 770 to an 800 without studying, just having an idea of what the test was like was enough), but its not worth the time, money, or hassle otherwise.

In other news, why are there so many Coloradoan Mudders on CC? Its not like we’re lacking things to do out here…

^^ No, my son is not stressing. I’m not either, but all this talk about 800s led to my comment.

A 780 in Math II won’t break an application. Promise.

Don’t worry about a 780 on the Math II. My son got in with only a 760 in Math II (some sloppy errors). He was going to retake because he got an 780 on the SAT I and knew he could likely get an 800, but he talked to someon at the school and was told that it wasn’t necessary and his time could better be used elsewhere. If the rest of the package is good (especially his SATI math score), a 780 should be just fine.

How many SAT’s do they require? Son has taken 2, Math and Physics, done well in both. But GPA is a problem.

If I remember correctly (I’m having issues finding it on the hmc website, maybe its buried somewhere within the application?), all applicants must submit 2 SAT II Subject tests - one Math(maybe only Math II?), and one Science. Or maybe its one math, and one of any subject. The applicant must also submit a full SAT or ACT with writing as well.

I’m pretty sure it’s Math II and any other SAT II. The only schools I know of that make you do a math and a science SAT II are Caltech and MIT.

Yes, it has changed. I think it used to be Math 2 and one science. Now it is Math 2 and any other SAT II. It is on the website under First Year Student Admissions. There is a section on standarized tests.
