So I got an SAT score of 2020 for the one I took in January. I wouldn't normally say that this is a bad score, but as I'm chinese, this is probably terrible under the standards that the top universities are expecting, right?
I'm taking my last SAT this Saturday(I'm keeping it to 2 times only) But I'm not sure I'll be able to get 2200 still. I'll probably only get a max. of 2150. Another option would be to skip this time (not going to the exam) and just wait until october to take it again. But the problem is I don't think I would have time to prep for it anyway this summer, but it's still worth the risk perhaps.

What do you guys think of the score 2020 for top unis (e.g. Ivy Leagues) or even the 2150 that I may be getting? And do you think that I should skip this test?

I think that there is no point in taking it if you haven’t studied. Wait until you can study and if not just keep your score. It’s awesome the way it is.

If you don’t want to take it more than twice, you should thoroughly prepare for it before retaking it. 2150 would be around 25% for Ivies. However, if you can get a better score before Summer, than you may start working on the applications for other good schools earlier. With 2020, you would be hesitate to apply to better schools below Ivy caliber. My suggestion is to take SAT up to 3 times if necessary. Go for the June test and then a final attempt in October if needed. Also, you don’t want to see a score delay in October that ruin your chance for any ED/EA.

Life is too short to take the SAT three times, particularly if you’ve already put up a 2020.

As things stand, you’re already bound for an outstanding school. I’m not saying you shouldn’t be ambitious, but it pains me to see anyone feeling “really desperate” over a test score.

There is a cliched definition of the word “insanity.” If you were to take this test again, what SPECIFICALLY would you do differently while preparing (and no, buying yet another $40 prep book isn’t different).

Great score. If they don’t want you because of this it is their loss!

You could try taking the ACT. Some people score better on it. If math is your worst test I think the ACT is better, with 3 non-math tests and 1 math test averaged together. Or don’t take it if your scores go the other way.

Yeah, and I should correct what I said, thanks other posters 2020 is a great score and you’re on target for a lot of good schools with that score!! It’s a bit higher than what my equivalent score was when I applied and I graduated magna cum laude from a great university. I’m not saying this to boast but to encourage you how good your score is. I was assuming you were shooting for the Ivies and they’d likely want higher. But a 2300 may not be good enough for an Ivy either. I still stand on that Billscho gave you good advice if you want to target the Ivies.

Thank you for your advice. I have decided to keep this up to twice in the end, as I realize that I still have to take SAT IIs in October, and I wouldn’t have much time to prepare anyway (cos I still have to do stuff like EE and TOK). With the score of about 2020-2150, what schools do you think I will be able to do? And to what extent do you think that the SAT Is matter for the acceptance by universities?

If time conflicts between SAT1 and SAT2 is your concern, consider taking ACT also. It is sometimes a better alternative to SAT1. With SAT at 2020-2150, you may look at many schools within the top 50 like UMich, UCLA, UNC, or something in that caliber.
Standardized test scores are useful for them to narrow down the number of candidates in the initial round. After that, they may look deeper into other factors like GPA, course load, EC, subject test, etc, and they may revisit your SAT scores section by section again.

Again, I agree. Mu kid’s scores are in that range and those are schools we’ve heard from. We’ve gotten stuff from Vandy and Wash and Lee since SAT and even Pomona(although I’d say that’s a reach). So my guess is kid at least has a shot at these schools as College board found scores high enough to start dialogue with these schools. Glad to hear UCLA is on radar Billscho. And Billshco, why’re your on, what about approx 2150 and USC?? EC’s are decent enough for USC and kid should get decent and likely strong recs. thanks for help on this post and one that I made on my own. And joanne, GOOD LUCK!!!

First of all, don’t count on the mailing from those schools. It is just a marketing tactics and CB makes money out of that by sharing your information. The schools have no exact idea what your score is until you submit to them. Those advertising scheme is likely target to a much much larger audience depending on their budget. Some schools may target to students in their area disregarding their scores. USC (at CA I assume) should be a match to high match too with ~2150 with an acceptance rate of ~24%.

oh. I know it’s only an estimate on the range of schools. My kid could go straight to med school based on some of the mailings!!! I still find that helpful as to what the range is though. thanks on USC advice. that’s about what I was thinking. putting odds at USC around 40 percent in our case. and joanne, usc is ranked about 23. so if your score is around that 2150 mark, I’d say schools around the USC ranking are within possible reach for you too. or as billshco noted, match to high match. Again, wish you the best on Saturday.

eh 2020 isn’t that great. if you’re shooting for ivies 2020 will NOT cut it at all UNLESS you’re extremely poor(in which case I highly, highly respect that score), a URM, or a nationally renowned athlete.

Ignore the above poster. A 2020 is fine, depending on where you’re applying. Since you’re Asian, that might be a detriment to SOME schools (such as Stanford), but not for other schools with relatively high standards.

Normally, it is not likely for a International students to apply for the top ivy Uni-s only by a 2020 score, except you have got marvelous activities and ps statement. so i really suggest you to take another sat test on october
