SAT 2020 is bad?

@relativelysmart: OP mentioned ivy leagues as potential schools…do you really think telling OP a 2020 is fine would do him/her well???

2020 is at around 94%. It is definitely not a bad score. However, Ivies are top 1% of schools.

A 2020 is a GREAT SCORE.
Jesus ****ing christ. Be proud of yourself.

I know the people on this forum are striving for success and it’s admirable, but please take a few minutes to stop ****kicking yourself and BE PROUD.

My god. I hate to make such a sweeping generalization and assumption but it’s like there’s a bunch of zombies on this website or something. Go outside, go to a party, have a beer or smoke a J. Please.

Agree with above poster.

I hate it when people ask this question. First ask the question, why does one take the SAT? To show colleges what you learned in high school at a standardized leveled. It really all depends on what college you are trying to go to! If you are trying to go to Ivy leagues, elite colleges, then NO, 2020 will not cut it for the AVERAGE person. (Obviously if you have ECs and great characteristics, that can surely make up for it!) If you are going to state colleges and tiers below that, then 2020 is a GOOD score. IT will by no means guarantee anything, but it is GOOD. Now why do you go to college? To get a good job! Or maybe you go because you love learning. Time and again reports come out (USA today, Yahoo), that Ivy league education is hardly any different than other colleges, the only difference is the NETWORKING. You will meet people in the upper echelons of society at elite colleges, which you can’t say for any other colleges. So that is my rebuke.

TL;DR
It’s no good (unless EC and stuff) for elite colleges, GOOD for everything else!

Oh yeah and if you have 2150 then you can go for the elite colleges!

I’ll toss in my two cents which goes along with several viewpoints. A 2020 is a good score but is not normally Ivy caliber. True if that score is paired with other admission characteristics that standout then there is always a chance. Students have been admitted with lower scores but the vast majority will be above 2020. That score will provide good opportunities at many colleges. So go for it joannecysung, you’ve got nothing to lose except an application fee and some effort.

Where is the mystical cutoff of scores where you should or shouldn’t apply to the Ivies? There really isn’t one. But common sense shows the lower scores have a much more difficult time. Heck my son has a 33 ACT and 2220 SAT and that is not good enough in our opinion.

Consider the following:

 1. Most people do better on their SAT the second time around. Having an additional six months of school behind you is part of that advantage.
2. People’s “advice” on this board is just a series of guesses. If you want to know what HYPS think of a 2020, contact one of their admissions offices. They have no reason to keep their standards a secret. Be ready to get an “it depends” answer, as they consider the SAT score in the context of the whole admissions application.
 3. Many college superscore, taking the best individual scores. It’s possible to have a 2150 and a 2020 and have a 2200 superscore if you did really well on one of the three sections in January.
 4. Being chinese has no effect on how your SAT score is viewed.

I would suggest that you take the test you signed up for. It’s too easy to back out of things at the last minute because you don’t feel “ready.” It’s also easy to pick up that habit early and have it affect your chances of success.

That won’t get you into an Ivy, unless you found a cure to AIDS.

Let’s be logical here. If you are not prepared, you will not achieve your score. If you are prepared, you (most likely under normal circumstances) will achieve your score.
If a 2020 is bad too you, then retake the test when you are READY. Will retaking now and still getting the same score make you feel happy? Of course not. So take it when you are fully prepared. To do that, you will have to give up time in the summer (if you are willing of course).

2020 is a solid score, but is not going to get you into any of the super-competitive schools unless you are also valedictorian, score in the high 700s on your subject tests, and have an amazing personal narrative like you were homeless, or fled a war zone to get to America, or started a charity that now serves thousands of people. Recruited athletes say they need to hit 2100 for the top schools. Have you considered a-mazing schools like Michigan, NYU or UC Davis? You would be a great candidate at many schools. Barring other circumstances, your score is too low for the ivies :frowning:

In short, 2020 is a great score, but not competitive at all in Ivy League schools…I mean we are talking about schools that have seen hundreds of perfect scores…do you think a 2020 will impress them? But if you have some other major hook, then you are set. Other schools (UC’s) are a good match for a score like 2020.
