Sat(2080)/act(34)

Hi I'm a senior from NJ.
I got 2080 (R:620 M:790 W:670) on SAT and 34 (E:34 M:35 R:30 S:35) on ACT. I took SAT on April and ACT on Sept.
I'm having a hard time deciding whether I should re-take SAT on Oct. I think my low SAT score will bother me if I just leave it like that (I HAVE to send it because of SATIIs). But I know that I can never get a SAT score of 2260 (converted from 34 of my ACT score). I know that colleges say they only look at the better score from whichever test I did better on..but I think 620 on CR will still do some damage. Or would it not matter much cus I'm thinking about applying to Cornell Engineering ED (they'll focus more on math/science?). I don't even know a 34 on ACT is considered a good score for Cornell since I live in the east coast and don't know what SAT/ACT conversion they're using.

any suggestions?

yo dude, ur golden, the college will look at and report the best score that they see so they look good in rankings etc., its all really a matter of whether or not u feel the need to improve ur cr section, so if u think u can bump it up 50 pts or so tehn i say retake it if u got nothin else goin on, or just sit back and enjoy the fruits of ur labor

Not sure if you are golden, as the geography issue is a net negative, especially for Cornell a +e, however I agree with scads88

Odds favor holding as is

I think they certainly look at the better score of SAT vs ACT when they NEED to want to look at it: for example to get a URM candidate through the door, with minimal damage to their average scores - for example typically into Cornell arts and sciences degree program.

However in your case, you have to submit SAT I for the SAT II's and you've already stated you don't suspect you can improve your SAT critical reasoning in any case, so putting yourself at the mercy of their (apparent) stated policy of only using the highest score of the the SAT or the ACT - may be the only choice you have

The Cornell engineering option I believe would make the URM issue less of a problem and therefore produce the best odds - aside from the fact that both your SAT and ACT math scores are high, plus you got a 35 on the ACT science score

I believe Cornell Engineering admittees have critical reading (or old verbal) median somewhere around high 600's or so - thereabouts your not too far off no matter

In any case, that's a pretty decent ACT score regardless of whether the conversion charts are from the Land of OZ or not

Not much you can do now about that critical reading score, however you do have an ACT english score of 34, quite good in fact - and what would happen if you end up doing 2080 on the SAT a 2nd time?

THEN they got a REASON to discount the ACT results

LOGIC dictates you hold your cards. You did everything you could to get into either Cornell A + S or Cornell Engineering, and you have to just accept what happens

I got 2100 my second time on the SAT and 33 ACT my first time (yeah, freaky close, especially sat breakdown). I'm not taking the SAT again because colleges say they'll accept the best of the two (plus, NMSF), and I'm not fretting about the ACT score because, you know what?, 33 is 99th %ile and 35 is 99.9th. With scores that high, what's the real difference between 1 or 2 points but a couple of questions. Really, what's the difference between a 33 and 34, or 34 and 35? I know a guy who got a 35 but still got rejected from MIT, his first choice. Mid to high 30's is good enough anywhere, so don't worry about it. There's no need to even report the SAT score. Sure, they'll find out, but so? they should still take the 34 and ignore the 2080.

My daughter earned a 34 on the ACT's (E -35, M -34, R 34, S -33; Essay 10).
She has not taken any SAT II's and does not plan to. Her top college choices are Boston College and Villanova. Does she need to take the SAT's?

I would check college board to make sure BC doesn't require SAT II.

BC recommends two SAT II's

worried: no harm in taking SAT IIs. Just don't send them if she doesn't need them and they're not great. That way your options are open for her to apply anywhere. No need to take the SAT reasoning test, though. (DS scored 34 ACT, PSAT predicts barely above 2000 so no SAT for us, although our goal schools require 2 SAT IIs).

Boston College website specifically says ACT with writing or SAT with 2 subject tests so I am not worried about that. Also, my daughter scored in the 97th percentile on PSAT's. I just can;t see the point of taking SAT and winding up with anything less than 99th percentile, which is where her ACT compositie puts her

dream…you have received the same exact scores as I have (different subscores; SAT was 650 M, 660 CR, 770 W and i cant remember the ACT ones). I am taking both tests again.
