sat 2s

when Rice says that each applicant should subit two sat2s in the area of proposed study, what would you suggest for policy studies??? i took US history and lit, but i think i did badly on lit. what else would be considered part of this area?

it doesnt really matter...take whatever you can do well on. a higher score is much better than a score that fits your area.

Math 2 is kind of easy (as far as the grading curve goes).

Just study and do well...

to answer your original question, world history, a language, or math (you need to take econ for policy studies).

I'm a potential Policy Studies major. I submitted Spanish, World History, and U.S. History.

!!!!

if I was applying to major in astronomy/astrophysics, would a 680 on the physics sat II look particularly bad?

I got a 700 on my physics SAT II, and I got in as a potential physics major (off the waitlist).

Granted, I took that exam after only a year of physics, but a score is a score.

well that's encouraging. it's good to know that scores that aren't perfect are still decent to colleges... anyway... how about retakes? I've only ever taken the physics test once, but it was on my second round at taking sat II's. btw... is a 730 for chemistry pretty good?

i t doesnt matter at all. i heard of peopel; taking history and lit and getting in for engineering.

In my experience, any score above a 700 will serve you pretty well; at the least, it won't harm you.

yea above 700 is good. also, u dont have to be limited to 2...u can send in more and they will look at it to give them more things to look at that u are good at.

i didnt do very well on my sat IIs (math ii - 640, bio - 700) and i still got in so im not sure how important they really are.

I couldn't find it, but Rice sent out a mailer last year with average scores for everything, including SAT Subject Tests (c).

I dug around Rice's website for a while but I couldn't find it. If you want me to send you the info just PM me.

I'm already heading to Rice in late August (sweet... :) ) but an admissions rep told me there that you don't really apply by major, nor does the school you apply into have any bearing other than let the adcoms know what your looking into or are interested in. In other words, if you applied to the social sciences, you can still take just as many engineering courses as anybody! In fact, you are not even considered to be in any of the specific bodies, you can take whatever courses you want. This offers significantly more freedom than other universities, where, if you decidied to switch between the generally polarized humanites and engineering fields, you would have to fill out another application. No, not at all! In fact, Rice is THE school for double majoring and many ppl double major accross the humanities/engineering/social science fields.

However, I should note the exceptions of the Music and Architecture schools. Those are specialized schools within Rice that require separate applications. From what I hear, Rice is #2 in the country for Architecture (I forget which college is tops) and that archis basically do TONS of work, aka, stay in workshops till midnight or an insane workload. The music school is also highly exceptional and selective. Other than that, just take the subject tests that you'll do best in. That's your best bet.

jack--
that is very helpful info on the SATsubject tests. My S really wants to apply and I thought he had no chance whatsoever. I've spent the morning going over the admit info from his HS on tcci for the latest class and it was very depressing to see what has happened to the BWRK in college admit decisions. I have been getting increasingly depressed over the admittance details due to what I have seen as he goes to probably the most intense academic hs in our area and they had what i regard as a poor year for results.

thanks jakpot!
