SAT/ACT scores

My son has taken SAT twice and is not happy with his scores. Now he wants to try the ACT in June.
Do the colleges that he will apply to automatically receive all his scores?
Or can he send only the ones he wants to?
He does not want to take the SAT again but if he does better in ACT then of course he doesn't want to report the SAT scores.

Thanks in advance.

I believe you can only send SAT or ACT. Some schools want all scores, but do you really have to send SAT and ACT? Read the SAT and ACT website for sending scores. I seem to remember that when you send SAT all the SAT scores get sent. Not know about the ACT.

If you didn’t identify schools when you took the test then the scores are not sent. You can choose which scores to send. My S took the SAT twice and didn’t do that well. He took the ACT once and that is the only score he sent.

I may be completely wrong, but I thought that if you needed to take advantage of super scoring that scores for all three sections must be sent for each date that is one of the ‘super’ scores. For example, if your son took the SAT three times and happened to have his best score on one section appear across three different tests, then he would need to send scores for all three sections for all three dates.

If instead he achieved his best scores across only two test dates, then he would only need to send the scores from those two dates. If he prefers his ACT score, he would not need to send the SAT scores at all, unless the school does not honor score choice. Some schools, and I think Cornell is one of them, require the student to send scores from all test dates if sending any score from that testing agency. So, if a school required subject tests in addition to the ACT, the student would need to send all scores from both agencies.

I believe (someone please correct me here if I am wrong) that most schools allow students to send only the scores the student wants to send for consideration with his application.

Colleges only know scores when the student requests that a Score Report be sent. That said, some HSs put standardized test scores on the transcript.

Generalizations about sending scores can be very dangerous, you need to check each individual school for BOTH their testing requirements (which combination of tests they want) AND their test reporting policy (whether they permit Score Choice; if they require all testing be sent, even beyond what is required).

The main (there are always exceptions) reporting policies are: Score Choice permitted; Score Choice not permitted; all standardized testing must be sent.

For an example of how convoluted testing requirements can be, see Stanford:

[Testing : Stanford University](http://www.stanford.edu/dept/uga/application/freshman/testing.html)

While only the ACT OR SAT is required, you cannot use Score Choice for either. AND if you have taken both, you need to send all sittings of both.

Since Subject tests are not required, Score Choice is permitted for them.

For the SAT, Score Choice permits sending individual Subject tests but only individual sittings (not sections) for the SAT.

Beyond what is sent, most schools Super Score, considering the highest scores from all sittings.

^ I just wanted to clarify on super score . Most schools do that for the SAT. Some do it for the ACT: [Colleges that superscore the ACT » College Admissions Counseling](Colleges that superscore the ACT - BS/MD Admissions by College Admissions Partners)

Question regarding the SAT Subject test reporting for a school that uses score choice and ‘recommends’ SAT2’s. If you take 2 subject tests on a single date, do well in one, but not as well in the other, are you able to send just the better subject test from that date (i.e. will collegeboard let you send them that way, not will the college accept them)?

Yes, Bluei, college board will let you send them that way. My oldest took the SAT2 in math2 twice, and for colleges that accept score choice, only sent the better of the two scores.

Thanks RenMom! I do know you can do that. S2 retook a less then stellar Math2 himself. Perhaps I wasn’t clear in my question. S3 already has a terrific score in WH from last spring. In May he’ll take two more tests. If he does well in one but isn’t thrilled with the other can he send only one score from that test date in May or if he sends one from May do they all go? The schools accepts score choice and only needs two so my question is specific to college board.

^As I stated above in my #4, individual Subject tests can be sent via Score Choice:

Erin’s Dad, Thanks for the help about the ACT superscoring.
