SAT/Admissions Advice

Hey everyone,
I'm a pretty good student, going to a private school in the DC area. I qualified for national merit (230 psat). I scored a v 790 m 740 and w 750 (with a 12 on the essay). Here's the problem: I scored a 690 on the Math IC, which ended up being in the 82nd percentile. I am deeply troubled by this because all my other scores are above the 97th percentile. Should I retake the Math IC in the fall? Do people usually retake SATII's? Do colleges look down on it? What's the latest test date I can take it for ED? Does it matter that much? Do schools see percentiles? I'm applying to Wellesley, Barnard, Brandeis, Claremont McKenna etc. Further problem: I think I choked on the SAT II US History today, as of now I've found 5 errors and I omitted 2. Should I cancel these? Is it better to spend the summer studying and take it in the fall again? Is it worth canceling?

Some may disagree, but I really don't think it's worth canceling scores. Rather than try to worry about retakes, why not consider taking the ACT? You sound like you'd do well on it, and then you don't have to retake the SAT IIs. In any case, a 690 will definitely not kill your chances.

Some schools still require you to take SAT II's even if you send them the ACT. I don't know what to tell you.

warblers is correct in that a few top schools will accept the ACT+W in lieu of SAT and Subject Tests. But most highly selective schools still require subject tests.

your USH score might surprise you...but definitely retake the Math test, (or take something else), since a string of 700s always looks good on an app. btw: if you've completed precalc this year, take a practice test on Math 2 -- it has a much more forgiving curve.

Schools will accept Oct testing for ED, and many accepted Nov scores for ED. However, that was when CB scored the tests in two weeks, which is now takes three weeks. Check the sites of the schools you are considering for further info.

This is true, but Wellesley, Brandeis, Barnard, and CMC all accept the ACT+W in lieu of SAT IIs (although CMC does recommend them).

I have a similar problem.
I have a composite 2200 (760m&w, but 680v) and I am planning on retaking in October (I took this last October)
I also took the Bio and Math IC SATII last May, and received a 720 and 710 respectively. I switched to Math IC from Math IIC a week before the test because I could not finish under 1hr and 30 min... I would like to apply to Stanford SCEA... and a few other first tier schools. So, it is a good decision on my part to take SAT Math IIC and another subject test in November? I feel like my low 700s are below par for the schools I'm looking at.

Since Stanford "recommends" Math 2, I suggest you add it to your resume.

btw: not sure if you are a Calif resident, but, if so, please know that the UCs no longer accept Math 1.

oh I had no idea Stanford recommends math 2, thanks for the info bluebayou!!!
And no, unfortunately, I am not a Cali resident.
Also... this maybe a futile question... but what is the general SAT II range for the top tier acceptee who does not have any major hooks?

dunno about subject tests, but 70% of applicants to Stanford have a 700+ on the Reasoning test. I would assume that the subject tests are at least that high, if not higher since a student can pick his/her strongest subjects on which to test.
