Sat again?

Trying to advise son (rising HS Senior) as best as possible. Any (all) help most appreciated.

PROFILE
1-Latino immigrant, US citizen

2-Completely Bilingual

3-Spends 3 months in Argentina every year

4-GPA, (excellent NJ HS) = 4.23 weighted, 3.98 = unweighted

5-Sat I-MATH = 800, WRITING = 700, READING = 600, TOTAL = 2100

6-Sat II-MATH = 760, PHYSICS = 720

7-2 high level technology summer internships in Argentina

8-Clubs and Organizations-officer chess club, rotary club, some volunteer work, etc., etc.

QUESTIONS
1-Should he REtake SAT I? What happens if he retakes and scores higher on reading but drops his math score? ALL colleges he's considering require ALL SAT sectional scores not just the highest. They say they look ONLY at the best sectional scores. Seems unlikely or they wouldn't require ALL scores, only the best.

2-Retake SAT II? How much is enough for top East Coast engineering programs?

3-Can good score on TOEFL (required for some schools) help him make up for lowish SAT I reading score?

4-Any chance of getting accepted to Ivy or top tiered (Carnegie Mellon, Cooper Union, Olin, Hopkins, etc.)?

5-Good (extra points for low tuition) safety engineering schools in Northeast (Rutgers?, etc.)?

6-Anyone have an objective POV on University of Maryland (College Park) Engineering program?

7-Best "bang for buck" engineering programs Northeast?

THANK YOU - THANK YOU - THANK YOU!!!!!!

I suppose that you mean that the colleges superscore. If the colleges that your son is looking at superscore, then yes, he should retake the SAT I to improve his CR score. A 600 may potentially bring down his chances at top engineering colleges.

Your son DEFINITELY needs to retake the Math II Subject Test and get a full score to be competitive. His Physics score should probably be at least 750 for top engineering colleges.

I don’t know anything about the TOEFL so my answer may be inaccurate, but I’m assuming that the TOEFL is only to make sure an international student’s English is proficient enough, and cannot make up for an SAT score. There is just a minimum point value to be eligible. You said that your son is a US Citizen though, so why would he need to take it? It’s only required for international students.

Carnegie: If he raised his CR score, he’d have a better chance of getting in. It would still be a bit of a reach though.
[College Search - Carnegie Mellon University - Admission](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board)
^You should be able to see the most important admission factors on here. You can search it up for other schools as well.

Cooper Union: High reach. CR score DEFINITELY needs to be higher, and if Writing improves too that’s a plus. Getting in would be very, very hard.

Olin: Assuming that your son does a lot better the second time around for the SAT, does better on Math Level II, and has good ECs (I can’t really tell from your post, though the internship should be helpful), he may be a match.

Hopkins: Low reach?

Rutgers would be a safety. I don’t know much about engineering schools, but this thread might help.

Judging from its engineering rankings, University of Maryland seems to have a decent Engineering program.

Sorry, can’t answer this one. Maybe someone else can.

“Any chance of getting accepted to Ivy or top tiered (Carnegie Mellon, Cooper Union, Olin, Hopkins, etc.)?”

Heck yeah! With those stats and hook. He will have lots of options. Put Stanford on the list, too.
