SAT and ACT minimums

I took the November SAT as well as the April Act and did terrible on both. What would be the minimum scores to be competitive and not be overlooked by Penn?
- Also if anyone any helpful study tips to improve Critical Reading and Writing scores that would be helpful.

This should give you a good idea as to how scores pan out.

Thanks! BUt still does anyone have advice for Critical Reading and Writing help?

Buy a booklet with lots of tests and just practice taking them.

Or you could get one of those expensive tutors…

There are no minimum cut-off scores, but definitely look at those average numbers.

You’ve gotta figure that most people (definitely the vast majority) applying fall into that average range, so SAT/ACT scores aren’t going to be the tipping factor to get you in.

You should plan to fall into that average range, and find other ways to enhance your application. With tens of thousands of people applying with similar test scores, grades, glowing recommendations, etc… it’s going to be a crapshoot. Hope for the best and apply to a wide variety of schools that you think you’d fit in at, and of course several safeties.

You should get a kaplan online course. I know it’s expensive at around 250 bucks, but it really helps.

Hum, Well, I guess it depends on the program, I scored terrible in writing and reading (630 and 640) but still got in in engineering (I did get 800 in math sat 1, 800 in Math II sat 2, 780 in both chemistry and biology)

Yeah! I got a 720 on the math but a 520 on reading and 560 on writing. That why i think they won’t considered me at all. I took it last November, which was to early anyways, but I am going to take it in may and october and hopefully improve. I think a have a good application besides the test scores. Why do you guys think or recommend?

I would suggest taking a course or something, because I’ve noticed among my friends the lower you score, the larger you can raise it by.

Also, Penn puts a lot of weight into class rank and GPA, so if you do well at those it could help you get in.

There’s really not much you can do for a huge boost in short time. Those scores are a reflection of years of education. The best you can do is probably memorize some vocab words. Unless you just screwed up because you’re a bad test taker, I doubt your critical reading ability is going to improve overnight.

writing is really easy to bring up. do a lottttt of practice.

the minimum score to look competitive as a non-hooked candidate is probably 2100. plenty of people get in with scores below that though. they’re usually “hooked”

There really is no minimum score for UPenn (or any other school in that matter) but I guess for most ivies they prefer 2000+, and moreso on the 2100+ range.

But I know a friend who got into Wharton with a 1980. But I also know she was a stellar student, was super intelligent and had amazing extracurriculars. So that really made up for it.
