Hi everyone, I'm retaking the SAT this weekend, and I was just wondering how colleges would use my scores. I've already sent some colleges my previous ACT and SAT scores, which are 2260 on the SAT and 35 on the ACT. English was the only deficiency on my ACT, while a major boost to my SAT score (800). Reading was the weakness on my SAT, while perfect on ACT. So would Ivy League colleges (esp. Yale) consider both scores together, with the strengths in one test making up for the weaknesses of the other?

Also, in regards to me retaking the SAT, I'm only trying to raise my reading score. If my scores improve little or not at all, will it hurt me? (I have to send them in for Early Action.) Or will they simply just use the other scores?

Personal view is that you already have two high scores and don’t need anymore SATs or ACTs (those scores would not be the reason for any rejection, something else such as grades, essays, etc. would) and you should not risk possiblity of taking another test and getting a lower score.

As to Yale in particular the answer is no they will not consider both scores together. Yale is one of those colleges that accepts ACT in lieu of both SAT and SAT IIs. The only way an SAT will be considered is along with two SAT IIs. The ACT is considered alone without SAT IIs. If you submit ACT and SAT without any IIs, the SAT will be ignored and only the ACT will be used for admission. If you submit the ACT, the SAT and SAT IIs, they will chose either the ACT or, alternatively the SAT and SAT IIs, to determine admission, depending on which they believe is better for you.

Brown and Penn do the same as Yale. The other ivies require SAT IIs even if you submit ACT and as between SAT and ACT they use that one for admission they believe is higher along with the SAT II socres.

Thanks for that information. So if Yale chooses to look at ACT scores, will they not consider the SAT IIs I’ve taken? Also, I’m already committed to taking the SAT again, so if I did receive a similar or lower score, would I be obligated to send them to an Ivy League college that does not accept Score Choice?

Yale will consider ACT alone for admission without SAT IIs. It also requires you to send all SAT and SAT II scores if you send any one of those. Some of the other ivies require the same. All the ivies superscore SATs and thus a similar or lower score will not necessariy hurt but appearances are not necessarily overlooked and if you score lower Yale reviewers will obviously know it.
