I plan to apply EA to UMass and I was wondering if UMass takes one's major into account when either accepting or rejecting an applicant. I am going to apply to computer science and I have a 3.86 (UW) and 4.38 (W) with a total of 5 AP courses by the time I graduate. My extracurriculars are fairly impressive too. What is the range of SAT scores that I need to be accepted ?

Even if you are not accepted into a competitive/selective major at UMass, you can also just be accepted into UMass as an undeclared student (even if you put on your application that you wish to major in compsci). Then you could take some of the basic classes to show UMass you are ready for the major.

If you are admitted as undeclared then you would not be able to join the cs rap. Just remember that Umass doesn’t look at the writing section so you need to do well on the other two. Good luck.

Great thanks for the help everyone but could someone tell me if CS admission are more competitive than the test and what the average SAT is for CS.

Hey there. I am going to be a Freshman at Umass (classes start in about 3 weeks!). I was accepted as a computer science major and I applied EA. I am out of state (CT Resident). First off, know that CS admissions are not that competitive. I had a 3.45/4.0 Gpa and 1830 Sat (650 Math, 600 CR, 580 Writing). The most important thing to know is that you need to have taken precalc to get accepted in the major (I think calc will help too- I took both). I messed up 10th grade and got a D+ in precalc and still got accepted.

That being said most Computer Science students I met ended up telling me that they were accepted as undeclared. I’d say its somewhat difficult to get accepted as a computer science major- but all you have to do is pass Math 131 (calc 1) and Comp Sci 121 (intro to problem solving with computers) with high grades and you’ll be in the major. If you took AP Calc AB/BC or AP Comp Sci I’m sure that’ll help. The people in my orientation group which were all computer science and math majors all had AP credits from Calculus, Computer Science, and various science classes. All I had was AP stats. My extracurriculars included tons of community service projects, debate team, Pre-Engineering Clubs, Anime Club, Various other random clubs I participated in at highschool.

Overall I think you’ll get accepted, most likely as a CS major. It all depends on what math classes you took in highschool. Average SAT for Umass is 1110- 1310 for reading and math. I got in easily with a 1250. If you have any more questions about Umass from an accepted incoming freshman’s perspective you can ask me. Btw Computer Science Rap filled up in less than half an hour this year. I wanted to get in but couldn’t because I woke up 40 min after rap sign ups started and it was full- so if you get accepted as a computer science major and want the rap make sure to wake up early and join it as soon as you can.

I agree with everything @penguinz03 said. The average accepted range is about 1100-1300 (Cr + M). This range is also expected to go up as admissions cycles are getting more competitive. And if you want to be a part of the CS RAP, you HAVE to be admitted into the major. I was accepted as another major, decided I wanted to switch into CS in late-March and was told that even though my credentials looked good, I couldn’t switch in until the semester started. Needless to say, I was not happy, because I would’ve liked to have been a part of the RAP.
