SAT and GPA

if you're applying as an international freshmen for American universities, would the school be more lenient about your SAT scores?
also, how would universities look at your GPA?? i mean, in my country (japan) we don't have any AP classes which Americans seems to see as one of the important things when looking at applicants... i have a feeling that in general, most Asian country schools offer a more advanced education until high school compared to the average academic level of the States (like, no offense i love america!) would universities look at your GPA that shows no such classes like AP and just think you are a poor student?

even though i'm really curious about this, i wasn't really able to find any information about such issues on the internet...

Don’t worry dude. Colleges are not dumb. Every year, there are many Asian students all over the world applied to the universities in the United States. They do understand that in Asians, they are no such things as AP classes and pretty much everyone takes the same classes. If you have good grades then you don’t have to worry. Good luck!

No, colleges will look at your application in context, they have admissions officers that know about the educational systems around the world, and they’re likely to be well informed about Japan’s educational system (which I may not know much about, but have heard is one of the best in the world). As for the SAT, it depends on the school and whether or not you need FA. They’re generally more lenient when it comes to CR/W if the applicant’s not a native speaker, but that doesn’t mean they’d accept an applicant with a score that’s significantly lower than the average of domestic students. If I may ask, what are your scores and what schools are you interested in?

thank you havarddreamer20!
I don’t know much about other asian countries besides Japan, but thats good to hear since I was kinda worried, not being able to fill in any of the AP things on my application!

Guitar500, thank you so much for your reply!

yeah, i think what we learn in Japan really differs from the States. I was wondering though, do you know whether or not colleges will look into which school you went? i mean, in Japan, the level of schools differs greatly since we have entrance exams for high school as well as university… so, the value of the grades really do differ depending on the school you go to.

i only took the SAT once, and my scores were CR:540/M:640/CW:530 and the school that i REALLY want to go is Florida State University…
they don’t seem to look at CW, but according to some sites, the 25-75% was CR:550-650/M:560-640. and according to fsu’s website, last years accepted score range (composite) was 1730-1960.
i think my math is okay, but my CR is lower than average…

i don’t know if this counts, but we need TOEFL scores too when applying as an international student. the minimum score for fsu is 80 and my score is 103. do you think they would consider my toefl scores too??

Your guidance counselor, head teacher, or principal will need to fill out a school profile that describes precisely how selective your high school entrance exam is (and if it depends on a selective junior high feeder school, how selective that entrance exam was.) S/he will have to explain if there is grade deflation to motivate pupils, and what an 80 at your school would be in a “general”, non selective high school.
Although admission officers know different countries’ school systems quite well, they can’t be expected to know each school from each country, so that the school profile presenting the school within the context of the country is essential.

Your TOEFL score will provide context for your SAT score.
You’ll typically get a 100-150pt leeway for your scores, so you’re within range. If you’re full pay, I’d say you’re in.

Why do you want to attend FSU (it’s a very large university to arrive to, as an international undergraduate student) and which other schools are you applying to?

MYOS1634 thank you for your reply!!

I’ll definitely try and do that if I get deferred from the ED. though I’m still not sure if I’ll be considered in the ED making. I took the SAT on Oct. 5th so my scores weren’t available by the ED deadline, the 16. however, I contacted the admissions office and was told that they’ll do their best to include my after receiving my SAT scores. but I’m really worried right now because it’s been almost 3w since my scores were sent to my recipients, and my online status for fsu still states that they haven’t received my scores. I know that I didn’t make any mistakes, but I’m REALLY worried… I did asked fsu about my SAT twice, and was told to be patient. so I’m kind of hesitant right now about asking them about my SAT for the third time! ha

that’s really good news to me! thank you :)!

well, I do have a couple of reasons why fsu is on the top of my list!
the first reason is because I want to major in criminology. Japanese universities don’t offer criminology as a study, so I really don’t have a uni that I want to go in Japan. I looked up the ranking for criminology in the States, and I believe fsu was in 7th place.
the second reason is the level of the school. I’ve only lived in Japan, so I don’t really know a lot of study related terms. I only now casual/slang… those kinds of English words. so, even if I do get in like say, the Ivy league, I don’t think that I can keep up with my work since I know I’ll definitely have trouble understanding vocab used in classes for the first couple of months. I’m not saying that fsu is a dumb school. I think it’s still sort of high for my level, but I want to push myself hard in uni and be almost the same as other native English speakers.
the third reason is… I’m not sure if this is an ok reason, but it’s because of ethnicity. like I said, I grew up only in Japan so I’ve always been the majority (I’ve never really thought about even being the majority since almost all of us are the same ethnicity… I’m from the countryside so we rarely see people who aren’t Asian). Asians are a real minority in fsu and I wanted to experience that kind of environment for a change.
other reasons are like climate, money (though I’ll still have to find a scholarship if I do get accepted) and such!

well, it’s embarrassing for me to say this since I know I have no chance of being accepted, but I also applied to Maryland (College Park). I’m also thinking about applying to Albany (SUNY) if I get deferred from fsu… (though I don’t really want to go to Albany)

anyways, I apologize for making this a really long reply. you really made my stress levels lessen a bit :)

If you like and can pay for U MD-College Park, apply to Indiana and Penn State University Park if they offer your major, the schools are somewhat similar.
In addition to Albany, why not look into Geneseo or apply to Cortland and New Paltz (I’m positive these two have Criminology). I think USF also has criminology and is less selective than FSU.
Are you applying to the HOnors College anywhere? Although there are cut off scores, if your first language isn’t English they may be able to cut you some slack as long as you have excellent grades and can send a paper showing your writing abilities.
