SAT Books? Do not start new threads. Post HERE!

@avitron142 Thank you for telling us about that book. For someone who scores 700 on the critical reading with some extra time, and in low 700 in writing as well, what books do you recommend?

Hello,

I’m going to take the new SAT and I must start studying now. Can I use the current edition of the Black Book? or should I wait for the new edition? Will it even be a big difference?

Thanks,

Hey! So I bought Barron’s Grammar Workbook for the SAT,ACT, and more… Can anyone vouch for it? I’m thinking of returning it and purchasing Erica Meltzer’s SAT grammar book.

Good move!

Hello everyone! Just jumping on in here. I’m completely clueless to everything SAT, so when I took my first practice test last week, I know I didn’t do well. I’m still waiting for my results, but I think I did alright on the English portion, and I know I completely failed the math portion. I still had so many problems left over and skipped. I’ve totally forgotten how to do everything.

tl;dr: What’s a good book for the math? If there’s not a definite one, which are the best and what are the pros and cons of them? I know it must’ve been argued countless times on this thread already, but I haven’t the time to go through it, so sorry for the loaded questions, but may someone enlighten me? Thanks!

Can u guys tell me which book i should use to increase my score. i m willingto buy other books. please help me!

Hi!
I just took a practice test from Princeton Review that was held at my school through our PTA program. I got scores of 510 (Reading), 620 (Math), and 490 (Writing- Grammar:48 with an essay score of 8).
I’m a junior planning to take the current SAT on December and January, so I have time to study and get ready to take each test.

I’m planning to order:
PWN the SAT: The Math Guide-----------math
Dr. Chung’s SAT Math-----------------------math
The Essential 500 Words---------------------------------------------------vocabulary
Verbal Advantage: Ten Steps to a Powerful Vocabulary---------------vocabulary
The Only Grammar Book You’ll ever need------------------------------grammar
and The Critical Reader by Erica L. Meltzer-------------------------reading

My brother already helped me download the pdf file for The Ultimate Grammar Guide to SAT Grammar (the older, yellow edition).

Also, Is there a difference between Critical Reading and Reading Comprehension?
If yes, is there any other book I should order for Reading Comprehension considering that my reading score isn’t high?
What other book should I order?

Has anyone tried the SAT Reading Comprehension Workbook: Advance Practice Series (volume 1) by Khalid?
There are pretty good reviews for the workbook on Amazon, but it wasn’t really mentioned here on this post.

You don’t need a book for reading comprehension; Erica’s got you covered. Also, I’d suggest eliminating Chung, Verbal Advantage, The Only Grammar Book You’ll Ever Need and possibly the Essential 500 Words. You don’t have as much time as you think and you’re better off doing more practice sections and less with prep books; unless you are only using the books to help you understand practice questions.

CR: For someone in the mid 600s range and wanting to get out of the 600s… (to 700s of course! :stuck_out_tongue: ) is the black book a good choice?

@CHD2013 What’re the best study books for each particular subject

IMHO, you should get the blue book for official tests, the black book by Mike Barrett for general strategies, and

Grammar - The Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar by Erica Meltzer
CR- The Critical Reader by Erica Meltzer
Math - there are several good choices, one bad one is Dr. Chung mentioned above (obviously many disagree with this
good ones - PWN the SAT: The Math Guide, anything by Dr. Steve Warner and The New Math SAT Game Plan by Philip Keller

Opinion of Gruber’s 2015 Edition? Especially regarding the math refresher sections.

Hey guys, I’m very bad at maths. I scored 510 in my first practice test, without any prep. What book would you recommend? The ones mentioned above^ I can’t find anywhere on the internet, not are they available in my country. Would Gruber’s Math Workboor or Bob’s clueless suffice?

@samuelfrimps Thank you so much for kindness. I’m from Vietnam. If you have any resources for Sat math, can you share me?

I will be using materials from many different sources but I will take tests only from collegeboard. The android mariam webster app is very pleasing.

Hello!

Could somebody, please, tell me what would be the best choice for a prep book regarding the redesigned SAT? I’ve come across mixed reviews about Kaplan’s and to be honest, I was going to order either the Strategies book or the one with 5 practice tests (and I can’t really make up my mind about it). I also noticed many are dissatisfied with the College Board’s guide. As an international student, I am taking English classes on the side since I’m prepping for the C2 Cambridge certificate, therefore I don’t think I need a separate book covering the critical reading. But I would like to read about the essay and math sections, and get familiar with the strategies and the overall description of the exam as well as possibly get a book with tests. I’d be really thankful if you point out a single such guide that offers the information mentioned above since I can’t afford to buy two or three prep books at a time.

I feel that the official College Board books are the best for your actual diagnostic tests. The point of taking practice tests is to get realistic scores on realistic tests, and you’ll only get that if you use the real thing. The blue book for the Old SAT is best. For the New SAT, you can get the Official College Board manual as well, but it only has four tests - and you can find them online and print them for free. Just search for “New SAT free tests” and you’ll find it on their site.

For practice materials outside of your diagnostic tests, your best bet is to use Amazon. The reviews of those books usually reflect their quality. Just type in “New SAT” and then see what comes up. Usually, Barron’s, McGraw Hill, and Princeton Review make pretty good books, but you want to make sure that’s the case for the specific editions in print. Sometimes they’re a bit hit and miss, even if most of their stuff is really good!

Hey!
Can anybody please advise me some book on sat essay.

It depends on what score you want to get, Dr Chung’s is great, but not excellent, I would suggest studying from the Barron’s prep book and I would purchase a Barron’s SAT Workbook, whether it’s the new SAT or the old one, good luck.
