SAT Books? Do not start new threads. Post HERE!

I noticed you don’t recommend Dr. Chung’s book. What about The New Math SAT Game Plan by Philip Keller? I recently watched one of his webinars, and he seemed pretty well-read on the Math SAT portion. He’s supposedly been doing this for 30 years now.

What about for Critical Reading?

But, does Direct hits work for CR skills? Or just vocab?

I notice you mention reviewing previous SAT tests. How shall one go about that if I’ve never taken one before and don’t plan on spending money? I do plan to take the Jan and May tests so I can get my answers back, but what about in prep for the first one?

Are those books interesting? I tend to like fiction and science, and dislike nonfiction/biography/history/politics.

Do you feel that the answer explanations give by collegeboard should be largely ignored, since they don’t usually give the quickest way to do a problem? Is it better to find the quickest way? For instance, SAT question of the day gives answer explanations but does not always give an efficient way of solving.

Is this [Barron's SAT, 26th Edition (Barron’s Sat (Book Only)): Ira K. Wolf Ph.D., Sharon Weiner Green M.A.: 9781438000190: Amazon.com: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Barrons-26th-Edition-Book-Only/dp/1438000197) Barron’s 3500? It doesn’t list “3500” on its cover.

Hello everyone. Is it ok if I get the Gruber’s Complete Math SAT workbook published in 2011? I think there’s one for this year, but the ones at the library are 2011.

Someone recommended Grammar Smart by Princeton Review. What does everyone think of this book? It was published in 2001, so quite old.

Does anyone recommend The Insider’s Essential Guide to SAT Critical Reading and Vocabulary? I know this same author made the Direct Hit and 500 Essential, but what about this book?

Just keep on practicing and remember there are online practice tests also, which you can buy off collegeboard. that helped me alot.

I just want to outline my SAT prep and see if anyone has any suggestions.

General:
BB (already have gone through 90% of it)
Barron’s 2400 (just starting, like so far)
Kaplan 12 practice sats

Reading:
DH Volume 1 (half way through it, love the format)
DH Volume 2
Critical reader by erica meltzer

Writing:
the ultimate guide to sat grammar + eight multiple choice sat writing tests by erica meltzer

math:
barron’s math workbook

any comments?

Yes, skip the Kaplan tests, find more CB tests. Have you signed up for the online CB course? More tests are available there. Also, make sure you do a thorough review after you take each test so that you fully understand each question.

Which is better Up your score or SAT 2400 in just 7 steps ?
Thank you

Hey guys,
The best books are supposedly Grammatix, RR, and Mcgraw-hill, however only the latter is still in production and can be acquired easily. So what are the best books for CR and writing? Also, which Mcgraw-hill is it, the overall 2014 edition or the conquering math?

Odacer I wouldn’t get Mcgraw-hill, but you can always buy it and see how it is.

First, get “The Official SAT Study Guide, 2nd edition.” This book is a good introduction to the SAT and has plenty of practice tests. Then, I would recommend buying a specific book for each section.

CR and W:
-“Critical Reader” by Erica L. Meltzer (3/4 the way done myself)
-“The Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar & Eight Multiple Choice SAT Writing Tests” by Erica L Meltzer (1/2 the way done myself).
-Vocab supplements. I use Direct Hits Volume 1/2 (staring volume 2 myself), but there seem to be other good ones. Know a good base of words + latin/greek roots, but don’t allocate all your study time to vocab.
-Both the Erica L. Meltzer books are great IMO.

M:
I use Barron’s math workbook. I like it so far, but am only around 40 pages in. I’ve heard good reviews about Grubber’s.

You can find extra practice tests online.

Going through the blue book and then targeting specific sections has increased my SAT scores a lot.

Should I get the the Gruber’s Complete SAT Guide or just Gruber’s complete math Workbook? As it’s the best for math.

I went through probably every book you guys have mentioned, and as a SAT freak I would definitely recommend the Insider’s Essential Guide for vocab. It’s statistically better than all other vocabulary books by quite an amount. For all other subjects, I’m afraid only a combination of a number of books would yield the best results.

I tutor math SAT and I use Barron’s Math SAT workbook. I think there are good illustrative problem grouped by topic.

What are the best books for a student trying for 750+ in math? What do you think of Math SAT 800 and Crush the Math SAT? Is Dr. Chung’s appropriate for students on that level?

I have all those books. The book that really helped me was Steve Warner’s Advanced 28 Lessons Book. It’s full of Level 4 and 5 problems with really well explained solutions…I had to work really hard to get through it but it paid off.
