SAT Critical Reading thread

I found the undistinguished/unsightly flower passage here:

[Plants Found to Show Preferences for Their Relatives - NYTimes.com](<a href=“Plants Found to Show Preferences for Their Relatives - The New York Times”>Plants Found to Show Preferences for Their Relatives - The New York Times)

anybody remember the other choices for the 1st paragraph about barbara jordan? It seems like the author is not establishing neither historical context nor jordan’s status as a diplomat. idk historical context makes sense but i feel like there was a better answer? anybody know the other choices?

Well damn, undistinguished is actually, probably the better answer. That’s tough though. Diminutive flowers and straggly (untidy or irregularly arranged) windblown stalks sounds so unsightly, but I feel like I might have been tricked with cacophony. But then again, diminutive lavender flowers and straggly windblown stalks seem pretty distinguishing for a flower! But seriously; someone explain “adroitness/residual.” What was the other part of the dexterity answer? I still think I’m right about that one. Any chance 4 wrong would be a 760? 3 wrong 770 or 780, maybe? It was 750 my first try and seemed way easier…

its definitely unsightly! the fact that the author can describe a peculiar plant makes it distinguishable… i thought this was an easy question

but it does say “nothing about this plant to suggest that is a wonder” … :frowning: and should i cancel!!! AGGGGGGGGGGGGH

From its diminutive lavender flowers to its straggly windblown stalks, there is nothing about the beach weed known as the Great Lakes sea rocket to suggest that it might be any sort of a botanical wonder.

— Undistinguished

monepo - you wouldnt be satisfied w a 2300?

this sentence could be analogous to: “from the bushy eyebrows and dull skin color, there is nothing about this man that would make you think he’s a millionaire.”

haha im aiming a bit higher… I realize it’s a fantastic score, but I feel that it is not the best representation of the level of my SAT skills right now.

you would consider that guy ugly… unless busy eyebrows are your type… ;)

monepo - im deciding on whether to cancel or not… i’d be really upset if my score didnt improve and i really need the 800 in math… i just dont seem to have enough courage to cancel my score… i’m living on the hope that there is that slim chance that i did fantastic…

No, don’t cancel. Have faith. I’m fairly certain about that answer anyway, to say something isn’t a wonder doesn’t mean it’s undistinguished. The whole sentence is distinguishing the flower as unsightly. But then again, does being a botanical wonder imply being sightly? Not necessarily, I guess. 750 cr/720 lit though, so I’m wrong fairly often… lol. I got screwed so hard on the vocab on this one, especially “brusqueness/whatever.” Sooo, what about adroitness?

so on the SAT CR, the section with the lack of writing in old cultures and the telescope passages was experimental?

for androitness/residual: As I remember the sentence right now, it went something like: yadda yadda when the gloves were temporarily removed, the astronaut’s __ was compromised; however, it didn’t have any __ effects. So I think androitness definitely makes sense in that context, and “temporarily” implies that the gloves were later put back on and that fits with having no lasting effects or residual. I don’t remember the beginning of the sentence or the rest of the answer choices, however :[

can somebody answer my question please???

Someone email the author of the passage and ask her how she would describe the plant lol.

LOL ^ someone please do thaat!!!

@24004lyfe what was ur q?

I thought adroitness was like a mental skill there. Dexterity was definitely the better word disregarding the second word. I can’t remember what the other word with dexterity was though, or the actual wording of the question.

I’m pretty sure skittish fits perfectly…also for gain was it “win over” or “secure” I thought win over because secure gives the meaning that she already had the reputation? One more question that nobody has mentioned. For the biofuels passage a question asked about what author 1 would think about biofuels lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Was it “unlikely outcome” or “unacceptable goal”??? does anyone remember that Question? Thanks

It’s on page 34. It’s one about Barbara Jordan
