SAT Critical Reading thread

What did you guys get for the question about how African tribal dancers/puppeteers would react to “kiddy” puppeteers?

i put skittish for giddy because the way she described it meant that the support for it grew uncontrolled in an extremely fast manner… i was stuck between exuberant and skittish but exuberant usually is associated w/ happiness… GAH IDK

and the plant one was unsightly. it talked about how ugly and like brittle the plant looks. also for the puppet one, i put “reject it b/c it is inaccurate” but idk ahhh

Dismiss it as inaccurate or something.

I didn’t know what skittish meant, it looks like I got that wrong :open_mouth: :open_mouth: oh well. Reading was tough this time.

@aviballer Yeah I put that there weren’t any residual effects.

@anonymousx37 I got both of those.

@ spoinkish:

- do you mean that the answer is: "talk about why there were fragrances available? "

  • for the musk question: the sentence was phrased: musk is necessary for the glue, which, raw, has a rancorous odor.

  • Also: Biofuels

  • Passage 1’s comment on biofuels
    -dubious? vs. crestfallen?
-I put dubious about the biofuel (he has a play on words, he seems to be skeptical about the assumed benefits)

  • Passage two would most likely state that the “proponents” had…

    • overstated the benefits (the passage 2 acknowledges some bad effects but not limited to the environment)

Barbara Jones:
- First Paragraph:
- for author’s interest (background)
- her speech in lines 64 -70 is analogous to…?
- I chose bussiness woman announcing something…after a long time → b/c the thing talks about long time (144 years) and suddenly an event occurs that revolves around the speaker.
- what did it represent?
- momentous occasion of change/progress
- NOT changing pt in her carreer
- what does the author say about other few politicians?
- that they were not being willing to stand up for one another?
- although could potentially be implied that the politicians were moral paragons, there is no actual connection btwn the first clause and the second, rather we can only go by the latter clause which states that the political compatriots (at the end of the 20th century) were not backing Jones up

i know this is wrong, but just for my two cents: i put for barbara story that its analogous to a small mayor announcing that shes running for state governor. LOL idk… why… it just sounded like she had achieved and succeeded in her career like a mayor would by running for governor-position

what was the question about momentous? what were the other options for the questions? I don’t remember what I picked…- the Jordan passage about her speech …progreess?

skittish: “Lively and unpredictable”

exuberant: “joyful enthusiasm”

the question had asked about the growth part (or meteoric rise) of the rise in popularity of the biofuels. The giddy growth. Thus, it should be exuberant in terms of support rather than a “lively” growth.

i think i put momentous but i dont remember at all…

I think it was like the 1976 and 1974 speeches were momentous in her career. Or something like that.

but were people happily supporting the biofeuls? or was it just the idea of joining a band wagon?

does anyone remember the war and writing passage?

^ i think thats experimental cuz i didnt ever read anythng about war. what was the one on the purpose of the question “do i remember him from classroom?” it was the one in the house passage

the point is not the motivation, but rather the event: that people had so fervently increased the popularity of the biofuel movement. That too, it was both quick and large in support.

crap. I had skittish but changed it to exuberant for some odd reason. The definition of giddy is excited, frivolous, dizzy. Skittish is very similar when placed in context of the sentence/ Although, exuberant could be right but its highly unlikey. Dam-n it.

also, in the house question, why does the author imply when he tells us tht his memory could be coming from the photograph"?

@eagles94 - can you please explain " Skittish is very similar when placed in context of the sentence." I thought that giddy may change meaning in the sentence, so we have to go solely on the context.

but i felt like the support just increased way too much at once… idk tbh… what’d you guys put for whats the diffference of the two passages for the biofeul one? i put “passage 1 criticizes the alternative form of energy while passage 2 thinks it could be potentially useful” but then i was deciding on whether it could be “passage 1 shows concern while passage 2 thinks people overexaggerate its harm” … also, what the was main purpose of these 2 passages? i put “to assess the utility of the biofuels”… :(

There was a question about a conciliatory debater or something? Choices were “firebrand”, skinflint"… I put firebrand.

Anyone remember a question with “outmoded”?
