I signed up for the March 10 SAT exam with the essay but my school offers a free SAT without the essay on March 21st. Should I reschedule the March 10 test to May, should I not do the free SAT or should I take both? I’m not sure about how prepared I am with the upcoming exams being so close to each other and I heard its not good to take the SAT too many times. (I’m interested in applying to UPenn, BU, BC, Northeastern, Georgetown, top business undergrad schools).
I took the SAT twice, a month apart from each other. I didn’t feel as though that was a problem or too much, but then again I really did no studying/preparation. If you don’t feel like it’ll be too stressful, and cost isn’t an issue, then I personally would say do it. The good thing about taking the SAT early is that if you do well enough you can be done, but if you’d like to do better you have time. (this is by no means an expert opinion- I’m just a senior in high school reflecting on my own experiences last year.)
I agree with @collegegirl6789. In my experience, taking them “back to back” actually made me more prepared on the second one (even more so than if I were to study then take a second one a few months later).
You state that your school offers a free test without the essay on March 21. That means you are in a state where the SAT is given to all juniors so that the scores can be used to demonstarte compliance with federal “no child left behind” laws and regulations. That also means that you may not be able to skip that test without a valid reason, such as actual illness, to do so. Thus, before even considering skipping it, find out what the actual rules are in your state.
Also note that in making your decision as to what you will actually do, be aware that none of the colleges you listed require the writing section of either test (all but Georgetown make the writing section optional, and Georgetown simply refuses to even consider the writing section at all), but I do not know to which other colleges you might want to apply.
In additon, you are already signed up for the March 10 test. It is my understanding that you cannot get a refund if you now cancel the test. You can take another SAT test later but I believe Collegwe Board adds on an extra fee for switching test dates.
