SAT dilemma..can I rely on superscoring, or should I retake?

I took the SAT twice so far (junior year.)

First time: 2190
Reading: 760
Math: 710
Writing: 710

Second time:2270
Reading: 670
Math: 800
Writing: 800

The first time, I was not expecting to do that badly in math and writing. I'd say math was pretty careless. In the writing MC I missed two and paired with a bad essay score it really hurt. And in reading I was one question away from an 800. Second time I knew I did well in writing MC, and my essay was just good ENOUGH to keep it at an 800. Math..guess no carelessness this time. But reading..I don't know what happened.

I really wanted a 2300+ and 750+ in each category. And reading is an important section. But I DID do well in reading before. If I superscore, I would have a 2360 which I am perfectly satisfied with.

I have one retake "left." (3 is sort of an implied maximum.) Do I retake or not? Will it necessarily be a win-no negative effect situation? I'm afraid that if I take it again my scores are just going to balance out..like mid-low 700s for all three categories, and it will show how my previous extremes were just flukes? I will definitely be applying to UCs (cali kid here) and POSSIBLY some privates?

THANKS!!

The majority of schools superscore the SAT. Why bother retaking?
Instead, focus on schoolwork and APs.

Who says that “3 is sort of an implied maximum”?

Hi there! Another Cali kid here  I have a friend with around the same score as you (2290) who got into UC Berkeley (Regents candidate). And another friend with a 2250 who got into UChicago EA. Honestly, your score the second time is fine - especially for colleges that superscore. Like the poster above me said, focus on your schoolwork, extracurrics and APs. :)
