SAT discussion in Jumpngo's jouranl MOVE HERE =] (feed/quick&slow,etc)

Feed, thats not bad. Your writing score is awesome. I wish I can get mine up there. Could you list how many u missed on each portion, (M, CR, W) And which test was this? we could discuss, etc.

@ QUick: Your'e just beast.

hey, how did your practice test go today?

lol yeah, about that.................. I didn't have enough time to squeeze a full one in. I had to go out at 6, and didn't get back until 7. And even if I did start at 6, i'd end at like 10 and skip dinner (no way). DId you take one today?

^ i didn't do too great :( CR- 530 Math- 680 Writing- 620

lol. YOur goood for everything else. Except your CR. CR will come, this isn't your last chance right?

Yay, my name's in the topic!! K.

It's weird jumpngo, my writing score is always in the 700 range on practice tests and my CR is the worst. But on the REAL thing, it's the exact opposite. (And it's not because of the essay. I always grade my essay an 8 to get the lowest range on practice tests...)

My mother made me join this SAT class, and I took my practice test there yesterday. So, my computerized score report with percents and all hasn't been done yet. The scores I posted yesterday were my own estimate. I'll get my report back by today or tomorrow.

I did Blue Book #4. Wasn't that bad. Although some of the Math questions were weird. =/
Also, I was very careless with Writing... got overconfident. I could have easily gotten a perfect. Facepalm.

Btw, note: DON'T EVER take an SAT class unless you're in the 1500-1600 range. Total waste of time.

@voodoo_santa: That's not that bad. Your Math is great. Can definitely bring it up drastically. As for CR, you just need practice... (and we all always say that...).

SAT is not an intelligence test. You have to know the test to ace it. And the more you practice, the more you become familiar with it.

Keep this thread updated. ;)

yeah. Classes are ga y. Lemme know how you did on your practice test!

i might start on a practice test after i finish with my hw...and btw could you guys tell me how you handle short/long/double passages? like do you read questions first, or passage first, or do it part by part?

well i found out for me, short ones, I just read questions first since theres only two. And i read the passage.
long: i've been marking the lines that have questions that pertain to them and I just read up until that point and answer. (i've been doing this for maybe a month?) Its not a bad strategy, I just need to practice. and voodoo, jus tstart reading everything like its an SAT passage.

So I got back my test.
Just as I had estimated, I got a 2050. Tch.

Posting this b/c Jumpngo asked:
CR: 670
* SC: 1 wrong.
* Short Passages: 0 wrong.
* Long Passages: 7 wrong.
* Fiction Passages: 0 wrong.

M: 690
* Coordinate Geometry: 2 wrong.
* Averages: 1 wrong. (?)
* Percents: 1 wrong. (?)
* Powers & roots: 1 wrong.
* Algebra II: 1 wrong. (This one was hard).

W: 690
* Essay: 8
* Sentence Correction: 0 wrong.
* Verb errors/Parallelism/Pronoun Errors: 4 wrong.
* Paragraph Correction: 0 wrong.

Bleh. I got overconfident on the Writing one this time (as I mentioned before).
Also, totally got pwn3d in CR.
Math was harder, imo.

Btw, 'Wrong' includes the questions I omitted. =/

@voodoo: My strategy:

Short Passages: Read the passage, answer the questions. No point in looking at the questions first then going back to the passage because there's only 1 paragraph as a passage.

Long Passages: Read the questions first. Then read the passage.

Double Passages: Read Passage 1 questions. Read Passage 1. Answer Passage 1 questions. Read Passage 2 questions. Read Passage 2. Answer Passage 2 questions. Then, answer Combined Passage Questions.

So voodoo, I guess it sjust experimenting for you. Find a way that you are comfortable with etc. Hey FEED, do you write 2 full pages for your essays?

No, I've not reached 2 pages ever.
The most I've written is 1.5 pages.

How about you?

Btw, have you taken Practice Test # 4 from the Blue Book?
That's the test I took.

All right thx guys, I haven't started test yet and i probably won't finish today even if i start but should i take this one timed or untimed (usually i take it timed) but since this my last one before the real deal thought i try it once untimed but i dunno if it's even effective

I'll see after this week. I'm making that my goal by May 3rd. And yes I have taken practice test #4

Book - Practice Test #4 04/13/2008
610-670
410-520 0 51-61 ( I think the writing is wrong, but I could be wrong. the auto grading system sometimes messes up)
620-680

We're those your average scores you listed, or highest?

Highest as in overall? Then, yes. 2050=Highest in Practice Tests.
Otherwise, 690 is my highest in CR, and 800 in both Math and Writing. =)

@voodoo, I say go for it! ;)

Lol, I feel special:)

However, the Writing MC's are inconsistent with me. I guess the major difference between high scores and low scores is concentration and how hard one applies himself.

So, what do you guys want to know?

Here's what I do for CR:

Short Passages:

I read through them and try to get the central/main idea.

I answer the questions and try to find the answer I think is correct in the passage.

Long Passages:

I read the passage first going through and making sure I understand the purpose and central idea of the passage. Also, I circle words that describe the authors tone and I also circle pivotal words such as on the other hand and nevertheless.

Then, I circle and make a star by the purpose questions like "What is the primary purpose of this passage?" and skip them. (I do them last).

For other questions I make sure that I am subjective and that every answer can be found in or supported by the passage.

Double Passages:

Same as long passages but do the two passages separately and answer questions pertaining to both passages last.

Other Factors:

Make sure you focus really really hard and read actively.

If you get bogged down by a question skip it and come back to it after you have answer all the questions you can (I find that the second time around I usually somehow understand the question).

SC:

I just made sure I understood the syntax and meaning of the sentence.

Also, I memorized a lot of vocabulary and Gruber's root words.

Hope that helps!

Nice. I meant, were those individual scores (M, CR, W) averaged between the ranges? Or were they taken from the highes tpart of the range? and wow feed. your awesome. what kind of scores did you start with when you began prepping for the SATs?

/, i'm about to start my first full essay. lawl. we'll see how i do.

@Quicksandslowly, Totally agreed with you on Writing. In fact, that happens to me on Math sections too. Depends on the test really. Sometimes the questions are way over my head. Hope that's not how it goes this Saturday.

@jumpngo, yes, these were average scores. I usually like either taking the lowest part of the range or the average and NEVER the highest. It's better to be realistic than optimistic.

I started with a 1590 on the SAT (And that's definitely not the OLD one). Lol.
I couldn't EVER get over 500 on CR. Took loads of practice. =)
And by loads, I mean tons.
