SAT does matter?

hi everyone.=]
im asian, have been here for 4 years,in a private catholic HS.
my SAT socre is 1040 and my GPA is 3.8,good EC,recommendation and portfolio...
i decided to go to a design/art school like RISD,MASS COL OF ART,PRATT,PARSON...do i have big chanse?

My D had similar stats and got into all the schools she applied to (including MAss Art, MICA & SYracuse, she didn't apply to RISD, Pratt or Parsons). I think you certianly have a chance. RISD may be the biggest stretch, but with a good portfolio you would have a chance there a well.

thx handemom
im interested in advertising and industral design..
i dun think i have time to apply to syracuse(school of design and art),should i do the app online and do the in-person portfolio review?In-person portfolio review or audition for programs in art and design, transmedia, drama, and music in the College of Visual and Performing Arts deadline is Feb 1..

My D did portfolio reviews at all the schools she applied to (some at NPD, others when the college had reps visiting locally), and also sent in the slides and whatever else was required. She did some apps on line but they all had some kind of supplemental information that she mailed in (with the slides).

You can apply to most (except MICA) online. You will need to still send your slides or digital files (although Parsons does allow you to upload the data). I have not applied to Pratt, so I'm not sure on theirs.

RISD is actually pretty helpful, you can complete an online application and email additional attachments directly to them. You still have to have transcripts, recommendations etc. mailed.

Just be careful because each school has slightly different information they are looking for; RISD has the "three drawings with bicycle", Parsons has the "Parson's Challenge" with three drawings and three written descriptions.

Folks like MICA ask for an Essay that answer's a specific group of questions, plus they want to know what you have seen artistically over the last couple of years. So keeping track of the galleries and exhibitions and the like can be important.

Most want a description of awards, activities and the like, but some online applications have very limited space for this detail. If you can't type in what you need, just use the "This information will be mailed directly to the Admissions office", instead of trying to cram it all in two or three lines.

I had initially thought to mail my d.'s application forms, but decided the online approach was easier. Make sure you use a simple text writing program like Notepad, many of the online application forms don't like the special symbols and formatting from WORD. The online forms generally allow you to work and save pieces of the application and not submit until your ready.

Just some suggestions and tips.

Consider University of Cincinnati. They are very GPA and class rank oriented and have a fabulous program in all aspect of design. They don't require that high SATs if your are in the top 10% or so of your class.

RISD is one of the few art schools that have some weight placed on your SAT/GPA

compared to other art schools

MICA does also.
