sat errors?!

I took the Oct SAT, and when I got my scores back today I was very surprised. Not only did I do worse in each section (with the exception of writing) I got the same score as the first time I took the test: 2010. I got a 680 CR, 630 M and 700 W. For the CR, M, and the W MC sections I did worse then before (740 CR, 640 M, and 70 W MC.) Since this is the Oct test, and the most people take it in Oct, could there be a chance that somehow they miscored my test? I'm a senior, and really nervous about my scores because it is so low. And how much does a rescore cost, I couldn't find it on the collegeboard website. Please help!

it costz 50 dollars for rescore..but they refund the money if they find an error

Do they rescore your essay?

no don't think so

Same here, my essay score was exactly the same and my CR and M scores were very close to last time I took the test....I was expecting to do better than I really did....I sure hope that they made an error!!

2010 not low unless youre applying to top 50 usnwr schools

well my dream school is pomona college, and I really want to go to upenn, stanford, berkeley (I'm a CA resident) and UCLA. And although I know that people say getting above a 2000 is a good score, its just not good enough for those schools

hey pomona is one of my number 1 schools (its tied with another) too!!! i sent my app already :)

btw-they see your best combined score so theyll see you as a 2080 which is like the 25th percentile for pomona i think. they are definitely a school that doesnt dwell on scores as much though. dont worry. i have a 660 on my sat 2 history (63rd percentile)

wow! pomona college is my 1st choice school too!!!
but i'm a junior and won't have to deal with applications till next year. :)

i thought my writing score was a bit lower than i expected.
but i'm not sure if i want to pay another 50 bucks for a rescore.

are there good chanaces(like 10%) that scantrons are scored incorrectly? j/w

I'm just wondering, how is it possible for them to make an error on a scantron answer sheet? I got a 710 in math in January, and I thought I made a 760-780 this time, but I got a 640. I'm just wondering if scantron errors are possible.

yea same. but i took bio M sat subject test, and I was expecting 750+, but when they showed my score they showed BIO- E with a score of 670. so i wonder what happened, i think i am going to call college board, and burn them after i graduate from high school!

Hm seems like a lot of people here on CC have similar questions. Maybe we ought to call collegeboard and if enough people call they might start rechecking.

honestly i think you guys are in denial. You got what you got, move on.

stop b****ing. It is irresponsible and cowardly to blame your disappointing scores on the College Board. If you really want to waste fifty dollars on a paranoid supposition that your score was incorrect, go ahead. It might pay for a fill-up for some College Board executive.

You want a good quote for your next essay? Here's one:

"There's a sucker born every minute."

PT Barnum--if he could have seen the people who spend fifty dollars to have their tests rescored on a pipe dream, he'd probably have gone into the SAT business, not started a circus.

Hm so I guess that the few people who actually bothered to have their 2005 October SAT scores handchecked were being overtly superstitious? If it weren't for those people, Collegeboard would never have known that they had made serious scoring errors. Now isn't it possible that the same event could have happened this time also? Nobody here is blaming their scores, they are just thinking that there is maybe a slight chance that Collegeboard goofed on this one just like they did last year.

DENIALL. not the river

I thought I did very well on the writing section as well. In the blue book I went through a section without missing a single MC problem. On the October SAT, I got a 660... However, maybe we all just got tricked.

I HIGHLY doubt that College Board would ever make a a grading error to the same magnitude as last year's. It would ruin them :)

koolaznpygmy:

The CollegeBoard does offer a hand-scoring rescore. This is a quote from their website:

"Multiple-Choice Hand Score Verification:
The multiple-choice sections of all SAT Program tests are machine scanned. The scanning process is subject to careful and systematic quality control to ensure accuracy. The following guidelines are published in our test and practice materials and are given to all test-takers:

Use a No. 2 pencil and a soft eraser. Do not use a pen or mechanical pencil.
Make sure you fill in the entire circle darkly and completely.
If you change your response, erase as completely as possible.
If your marks conform to the published instructions for marking the answer sheet, the scanning and scoring processes, combined with the quality control procedures, are designed to produce an accurate score.

However, if you believe the process did not produce an accurate score, you may request a multiple-choice hand score verification. When hand scoring of a multiple-choice score is requested, your entire answer sheet will be manually reviewed—you cannot request verification of scores for a single section on the SAT Reasoning Test or a single Subject Test.

If your marks conform to the published instructions for marking the answer sheet, but there was an irregularity in the scanning and/or scoring process, your score may change. In this circumstance, your adjusted score will be automatically reported and your fee will be refunded.

IMPORTANT: If your marks did not follow the published guidelines your scores will not change, and your fee will not be refunded.

Essay Score Verification
For the SAT Reasoning Test, our normal scoring process includes an independent scoring of each essay by two qualified readers. If the two readers' scores differ by more than one point, a scoring director will score the essay. This automatic validation ensures the accuracy of the essay scoring process.

If you choose to have your essay score verified, we will investigate whether there was an error made in the technical processing of the essay scores assigned by essay readers.

IMPORTANT: The verification of essay scores does not include re-reading the essay or an appeal of the essay score. The score investigation fee will not be refunded for essays written in pen.

Requesting Score Verification
You can request a multiple-choice hand score verification or essay score verification, or both, up to five months after the test date by calling Customer Service. There is a processing fee required to cover the costs associated with investigating your scores. If you used a fee waiver to pay SAT registration fees, the processing fee will be reduced. The reduced fee is available upon request and is provided on the Request for SAT Score Verification form.

We will mail a letter confirming the results of your multiple-choice hand score verification or essay score verification within three to five weeks after your signed request and payment are received. If a technical error is found in the original scoring of your answer sheet or your essay, we will notify your score recipients of your correct scores by letter, and we will refund your payment in full.

IMPORTANT: Multiple-choice hand score verification and/or essay score verification may result in higher or lower scores than the scores first reported. Adjusted scores are FINAL and will be reported to all score recipients."

Best of luck in your quest to get your test rescored!

I dropped 170 points unweighted as well, but even if CB screwed up, I'm reluctant to spend the $50. It just seems like they could take my money and not even do anything, they're so opaque.

Oh well, best redirect my energies towards acing the one tomorrow, then.

If you guys get any scores successfully changed, be sure to post on the forum ASAP and THEN I'll dutifuly pay my 50bux!
